Mary McDonald, 88, of Fort Smith, died November 16, 2015 in Fort Smith. She was born August 16, 1927 in Fort Pierce, FL to David Barnett and Grace Emily Long Flinn. Mary was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as director of the Chancel, Children, and Handbell Choirs, and she was organist for more than 40 years. Earlier, Mary also served as organist for Goddard United Methodist Church where she also taught kindergarten. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Fort Smith Musical Coterie; she taught private piano lessons, and was a 1994 Civic Center Honoree. She was an honored member of the Fort Smith musical community, playing for many people and events during her years of service.
She is survived by one daughter, Emily and husband Ron Evans of Fort Smith; one sister, Barbara Sturgeon of Birmingham, AL; one grandson, Stephen Evans of Aberdeen, UK; nieces and nephews, Carol Sturgeon Moore, Randy Sturgeon, and Richard Sturgeon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William McDonald and daughter, Charlotte McDonald Jones.
Memorial service will be Friday, November 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the First Presbyterian Church with burial in the U.S. National Cemetery prior to the Memorial Service all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
The family will greet friends on Thursday evening from 5-7 PM at Edwards Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the McDonald Music Series of First Presbyterian Church which was created in Mary’s honor as an outreach to the community through music. FPC, 116 North 12th Street, Fort Smith, AR 72901.
