

Mary Warren Huntley McSwain, 86, of Fort Smith, AR passed away on January 14, 2022. She was born August 31, 1935 in Grenada, MS to William Warren Huntley and Mary Lee Binns Huntley. She grew up in Jackson, MS, and attended Milsaps College before marrying Charles Miller McSwain in 1955. She and Charles enjoyed 57 years of marriage and raised three children, Scott Huntley McSwain, Amy Warren McSwain Baker, and William John Miller McSwain. Her greatest joy was her four grandchildren.
Mary was greatly fulfilled by working with young people. After earning her Master of Education, she taught tenth grade English for years before re-entering college to become Fort Smith’s only High School Latin teacher. Many Latin scholars earned perfect scores on the National Latin Examination under her tutelage.
For over 50 years, Mary participated in P.E.O., a Philanthropic Educational Organization. She and her sisters in the J Chapter, as well as international P.E.O. chapters empower and educate thousands of young women from all corners of the world.
Mary is survived by one daughter, Amy McSwain Baker and husband James Baker of Collinsville, OK; one son, William John Miller McSwain and wife Angela of McKinney, TX; one sister in law, Dorothy Williams of Jackson, MS; four grandchildren, Madelyn Dabbs McSwain, Mary Huntley McSwain, Alexander Warren Baker and Mary Kathryn Baker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Miller McSwain; son, Scott Huntley McSwain and brother, Frank Williams.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with burial to follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm Monday, January 31, 2022 at Edwards Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the P.E.O. Chapter J Educational Fund.
