The oldest daughter of nine children, Ruth grew up working fields, living in a sod house in the plains and eventually moved with her family to settle in Grants Pass, Oregon. In 1942, she met Roy Myers, a soldier who was in training at a camp close to Grants Pass. After 6 weeks of courtship, they married and she became an army wife.
Shortly after discovering she was pregnant with her first child, Virginia (Ginny), Roy left to fight in World War 2, where he stormed Utah Beach at Normandy and was wounded twice. She bravely supported Roy and the war effort stateside and when he returned from war they had another child, Roy W. Myers.
For 20 years she faithfully supported Major Roy P. Myers and his military career, following him to posts in Germany, Indiana, and Georgia. All while raising two wonderful kids and supporting them in their different endeavors. Her home was always open to their friends, and she loved helping out with their school activities and sports. Upon retirement they traveled often visiting family and friends all over the country.
Ruth loved to be with her family, and she especially loved being with her granddaughters, Ginger, Ashley, Katie and Brooke. Nothing was better than getting to spend the night in her pink bedroom and sit at the table the next morning and drink milky coffee from her china cups, while she cooked breakfast and grandpa worked on his crossword puzzle. She made friends that would become like family, and she loved when they were all together. She loved the Cardinals and could be found watching them any time they were on TV.
Of all the things that were important to Ruth, her identity in Christ was at the top. Her faith in Christ provided her with joy and comfort as well as courage to face the hardships of her life. She never wavered trusting in God’s goodness. That faith sustained her in the loss of her only daughter from cancer, the loss of her husband of 66 years and the loss of all 8 of her siblings over the years. It has been an example to her family of how to live a life sustained by Jesus and there is no doubt last Wednesday that she heard the words “Well done good and faithful servant”.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Major Roy P. Myers; her daughter Ginny Myers Kennedy; her parents and all eight of her siblings.
She is survived by her son Roy Myers and wife Ann of Fort Smith; Granddaughters Ginger DiTullio and husband Michael of Memphis, TN, Ashley Thurman and husband Greg of Berryville, AR, Katie Myers of Fort Smith, AR and Brooke Baird and husband Jerod of Fort Smith, AR. Great grandchildren Eli and Ben Bernstein of Memphis, TN, Abby, Mia and Paige Thurman of Berryville, AR and Will Baird of Ft. Smith, AR.
