

A. James “Jim” Stein, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Coventry Meadows surrounded by family. Born in Fort Wayne in 1928, Jim was a graduate of South Side High School where he excelled in track and field and football. Jim went all the way to State as a long jumper. He married Lee DeWitt, his high school sweetheart, and joined HWI - Do It Best Corp in 1957. He started the Advertising Department and grew the department to 30 people in 12 years. Jim retired as Sales and Promotions Manager in 1993. Family and friends were very important to Jim. He cherished his growing family of daughters-in-law, grandsons and granddaughters, and never missed a local hockey game when his grandsons played. He enjoyed all sports including tennis and golf and Monday Night Football with his buddies. He and Lee traveled frequently with family and friends. Jim wasn't content to sit back in retirement and was a Loaned Executive via Do It Best Corp to the United Way of Allen County. He called on up to 80 companies planning and making group presentations to corporate employees for 7 years. Jim also assisted the IPFW Volleyball Team in fund raising with local schools, clubs and churches through special programs and matches. Jim assisted in setting up host programs for visiting teams traveling to Fort Wayne. He was host to NCAA National Volleyball finals, USA National Volleyball Teams as well as teams visiting from foreign countries. Jim is survived by sons, Mark (Diane) of Fort Wayne, and Doug (Ellynn) of Fishers, IN; granddaughter, Amy (Tony) Ferrell, Fort Wayne, grandsons, Matt (Lyndsey) Stein of Granger, Rob Stein of Fishers, and granddaughter, Ally Stein, attending Purdue University. His grandkids gave him great grandchildren Avery & Cooper Ferrell and Ella Stein. He is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the country. Jim is also survived by his companion and caregiver Toots McClaren. Jim was preceded in death by wife, Lee; son, John; parents, Arthur and Helen; sisters, Marcie and Bettilu; brother, Charlie and sister-in-law, Jo. Memorial service is 12:00 p.m. on Friday August 7, 2015 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne with calling beginning at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jim Stein IPFW Volleyball Fund.
