It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty Claire Harter who left us peacefully on August 10th, 2024. Betty was 92 years old at the time of her passing. Born in Sellars, Kentucky, Betty spent her early years working at Cincinnati Bell starting in 1950 until her retirement in 1973. Betty loved to play golf, volunteered for the Huntington Church Food Bank, and travelled the world, sometimes with her husband. After moving to Fort Wayne in 1999 she joined the Aldersgate United Methodist Church and volunteered for their bi-annual rummage sale. Betty was known for her love of dogs, specifically Yorkies, and her contagious humor, often playing practical jokes on her friends and relatives. She often would answer her phone with “Pete’s Pool Hall, eight ball speaking”, and had the endearing habit of calling her friends and family "my little chickadee". Betty was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her sister, Linda Holcomb; nieces Michelle West, Roxanne Maier, Jacqueline Barker (Ken), Danielle Combs (Greg); nephews James Wilson, Gregory Sites (Deborah); 12 great nieces and nephews, 20 great-great nieces and nephews and 1 great-great-great niece and 1 great-great-great nephew. She was preceded in death by husband William Harter and parents Etta and Dorsey Wilson, brother Eugene Wilson and great niece Jamie Franchini. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46804. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Entombment will follow the service in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local Animal Shelter, Special Olympics, or St. Jude. Betty will be remembered for her infectious personality, being affectionately known as the “candy lady”, and the positive effect she had on the lives of those around her. Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all that knew and loved her. Rest in peace, Betty.
