Carl R. Hartup, 91, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2021 in Dublin, Ohio. He was born January 9, 1930 in Mishawaka, Indiana, son of the late Bruce C. and Irma (Woodward) Hartup. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He married Maxine J. Hurst, September 15, 1951 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Denise (Robert) Bridges of Dublin, Ohio, Debra Sharvin (Jimmy Hull) of Worthington, Ohio and David Hartup of West Chester, Ohio; grandchildren, Kelly (Robert) Perlman, Amy Oaks, Megan (Justin) Wester, Michael Sharvin (Amber Evans), David Sharvin (fiancé Jamie Goldstein), John Sharvin, Nicholas Hartup and Emily Hartup; great granddaughters, Avery Oaks, Henley Perlman, Savannah Wester and Astrid Sharvin-Evans.
He graduated from Fort Wayne Central High School in 1948 and The Fred Archer School of Photography in Los Angeles, California in 1950. After graduation from photography school, he entered the Army in 1951 during the Korean War. The Army did not find a use for his photographic skills so he served two years as an anti-aircraft gunner and battery clerk. In 1953, he joined the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel and helped organize the newspaper’s first photographic staff. He was named Chief Photographer in 1955, Photo-Graphics Editor in 1974, and Director of Photography in 1981. He retired in 1990 after 37 years with the newspaper. The Indiana News Photographers Association named him Indiana News Photographer of the Year in 1958 and again in 1960. He won over 150 awards in state, regional and national photojournalism competitions. He was a member of the News-Sentinel staff that won the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting of Fort Wayne’s 1982 flood.
After attending two University of Missouri Photo Workshops, Carl felt the experience would be extremely valuable to photojournalism students. In 1972 he worked with the News-Sentinel to establish, and then administer, the News-Sentinel scholarship to the Missouri Workshop for one photojournalism student to attend each year. The scholarship continued for over 20 years. Maintaining a strong interest in the education of students, he taught college photojournalism courses at the Fort Wayne extensions of Ball State University and IPFW journalism departments.
An active member of United Faith Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder, trustee, and deacon. He was a life member of The National Press Photographers Association and member of the Fort Wayne Central High School Alumni Association. Carl loved to travel and chronicled his adventures with photos. In retirement, he and his wife, Mickey, enjoyed spending winters in Texas where they made many friends.
In 2016, he participated in the Honor Flight program and thoroughly enjoyed the day visiting memorials in Washington, DC. He loved sharing adventures with his family and many memories were made for the family to cherish.
A private family funeral service will be held in Dublin, Ohio. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Road, Fort Wayne on Saturday, July 17, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. where the family will welcome all those who wish to join in celebrating Carl’s life.
