He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Charlie was drafted into the United States Army in 1951, and he answered the call to service as did his father and uncles before him. He was trained as an infantryman and served 16 months of active duty in the Korean War in the 79th Engineer Construction Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
He married Jacqueline A. (Anderson) in 1954, and they raised six children, sharing 61 loving years together. His life was built on faithfulness and devotion to God, love of family and friends, and quietly caring for others in need. He was a humble man who never expected nor wanted recognition for his service to others.
Charlie was the cofounder of Momper Insulation in 1956. Together, he and his wife built the business into a successful Tri State company. Charlie led by example and his leadership, organizational skills, and eye for detail, have resulted in the company’s continued success after 70 years. He is recognized and appreciated by past and current employees and clients for his fairness, work ethic and integrity.
During his 43 year career, Charlie was active/affiliated with the following organizations: Officer of the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce; twice serving as President of the Fort Wayne Better Business Bureau; former Board Member for the Fort Wayne Home Builders Association (awarded the “Golden Hammer”); Director and charter member of the Insulation Contractors Association of America (ICAA); member of the Fort Wayne Optimist Club; and longtime supporter of the Serra Club (supporting Catholic seminarians and priests).
Charlie was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and a decades long past member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where lifelong relationships were built and passed on to the next generation. He was a Notre Dame football and basketball fan since he was nine years old and held season tickets for decades. He was an avid card player, pool shark, dominoes player, prankster and sudoku puzzle master. There was always a new joke to tell when you visited him. In his early years he was a member of a bowling team, summer softball team, and enjoyed fishing. He had a passion for driving Cadillacs. After retirement, he wintered in Venice, FL where he enjoyed golfing, reading, get togethers with friends, and worshiping every hour of sunshine.
The love of travel led Charlie and Jacqueline on many adventures throughout the United States along with five Continents. They flew on the Concorde; sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on the QEII and sailed the Panama Canal. After each grandchild’s First Communion, a special weeklong trip was taken with Papa and Gaga to a dude ranch in Colorado. Lifelong memories were made watching him ride a horse, square dance and trout fishing.
In 2017 Charlie was honored to travel with a group of fellow veterans on the Honor Flight to Washington DC. His highlight of the trip was visiting the Korean War Memorial. Many school age students and government officials stopped and thanked him for his service. He told us how special their words meant to him.
In November 2023, surrounded by family and friends, Charlie was honored at the Veterans National Memorial Shrine & Museum in Fort Wayne. He was selected to be depicted as one of the 12 statues in the Korean War memorial. This was one of the highlights and greatest honors for Charlie in his later life.
Charlie was a faithful servant and lived a full life on earth. Now he lives eternally with our Lord Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline; daughter, Jamie L. (King); and siblings, Irene Albert, Margaret Berg, Louis Momper, and Rose Ann Eichman.
His legacy lives on in his surviving children: Andy (Ann) of Carrollton, VA; Michelle Giauque (Peter) of Marietta, GA; Matt (Lisa) of Fort Wayne, IN; Nancy Reed (John) of Fishers, IN; and Jacquie Downey (the “late” Eric) of Fort Wayne, IN; 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the loving care provided by his caregivers, Fran, Cortney, Brandy, Shelley, Rupel, Joel, Latasha and Arianna.
