David A. Preston, 72, of Kendallville, passed away on August 25, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center. He was born in Fort Wayne, IN to the late James Preston and Berniece Silhavey. He grew up in Madison, CT and graduated from Daniel Hand High School. He then moved to Fort Wayne and married Rebecca (Francies) on November 17, 1973; they shared 51 wonderful memory-filled years. He retired as a supervisor at the City of Fort Wayne Street Department in 2012.
Dave was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, known for his infectious sense of humor, his unwavering love for his family, and his deep passion for life.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Becky; daughters, Sarah (Steve) Kauffman of Collegeville, PA, and Liz (Jarret) Davis of Whitehouse, OH; five grandchildren, Madeline, Grant, Morgan, Miles and Owen; brother, James “Mick” (Pat) Preston; step-brother, Paul (Gladys) Camp; step-sister, Sandy Pierce, and many nieces and nephews.
He was a devoted fan of college basketball, especially Indiana University. His passion for the game was unmatched. He passed that love onto his daughters. He never missed watching their games. He was always cheering louder than anyone else, and known to have been tossed out of a game or two.
Music was another joy in Dave’s life. Family music nights, where he and his family played “Name that Song,” filled the house with laughter and memories. His love for music was only rivaled by his natural ability to make everyone around him feel welcomed. He loved to cook and was well known for his beef jerky, chicken wings, ribs and tacos.
After retirement, Dave and Becky fulfilled a lifelong dream of purchasing property where they spent countless hours working around their farm together. They also traveled, visiting many national parks, with a love of visiting Lake Michigan and creating unforgettable memories along the way. Above all, Dave’s greatest joy came from being surrounded by his family.
