

Edna Mae Smith, an adoring wife and loving mother, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 5, 2020. Edna was born in Cusseta, Georgia on December 29, 1929 and grew up with her family in Indianapolis, Indiana. Many knew Edna as the executive editor and publisher of Frost Illustrated, Fort Wayne’s first African American weekly newspaper, for more than thirty years. As a business woman, she was presented with the Sagamore of Wabash Award and many other recognitions throughout both local and national news media communities. She served on numerous state and local boards and committees. She loved the Lord and was a long standing faithful member of Turner Chapel AME Church where she served as a stewardess, member of the floral club, and usher board. Edna was an avid bowler and enjoyed traveling. She was an exceptional scrabble player and routinely watched Family Feud during her later years. She loved any game that was an analytical challenge. Edna was devoted to her family. Edna married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Attorney Edward N. Smith. They were married for more than 72 years and raised four children. Edna is survived by her husband, Edward; four children, Alice J. (James) Seymour, Dr. Linda L. Smith, Edward N. Smith, Jr, and Attorney Charles C. (Lisa) Smith; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one sister. A Memorial and celebration of life services will be announced at a later date.
