

Ernest “Ernie” Walter, 88 of Fort Wayne, IN passed away September 24, 2018. Ernie was born to the late Adolph and Anna (Muller) Walter in Fort Wayne, Indiana on February 23, 1930. Ernie graduated in 1948 from Central Catholic High School and joined the Marine Corp where he saw action in the Korean War. Upon Ernie’s return from the war he married Marian Minnick February 16, 1952, whom she preceded him in death. He went to work as a truck driver for international Harvester Company before joining the Fort Wayne Police Department when he was 32 years old. Ernie was assigned to the detective division after a year and headed that division as a Captain from 1972-1976. He served the department as the Deputy Chief of the department. Ernie retired from the department in 1985 after 23 years. He is survived by his son, Daniel (Vicki) Walter, Otterbein, IN and his brother-in-law, Delbert Minnick. Ernie is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his son Dave. Mass of Christian Burial will be held, Wednesday October 3, 2018 10 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church 2213 Brooklyn Ave. Fort Wayne, IN with visitation there 1 hour prior to the mass. Additional visitation will be held Tuesday, October 2, 2018 2-5 & 7-9 PM at D.O. McComb & Sons –Lakeside Park Funeral Home 1140 Lake Ave. Fort Wayne, IN. Ernie will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen or to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
