

EUGENE I. CHURCHWARD, 94, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Retired as a steelworker with the Ironworker's Union 147; he was also a driver for Fort Wayne Auto Auction. He had been a longtime member of American Legion Post 241, Waynedale. Eugene attended Elmhurst High School and learned welding and horse shoeing at the family blacksmith business in Waynedale. He enlisted in the Army during World War II, assigned to the 9th Armored Division, which fought heavily in many locations throughout Europe. Surviving are daughters, Jean Ann and Sharon Mae; grand-daughter, Micah Rechele (Marc) Poirier of Carmel; sisters, Susan Vorich and Lorraine Hoss of Indianapolis; and brother, Paul (Carolyn) of Churubusco. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edna (Herber) Churchward; wife of 56 years, Anna (Ayers) Churchward; sisters, Edna Pennycoff Imel, Rita Kendrick and Cecilia Churchward; and brothers, Page, Wilbur, James, and William. Memorial service is 1 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2016, at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, 1327 North Wells St., with visitation one hour prior. Preferred memorials to Black Pine Animal Sanctuary or the A.S.P.C.A. Fort Wayne.
