Helen Ruth (née Brown) Current, aged 88, decided to join her husband Norm to sit and chat with fellow angels on the driveway in the clouds and passed away peacefully on September 5, 2024, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the same city where she was born on July 25, 1936.
A proud alumna of South Side High School, Helen began her working life making donuts at G.C. Murphy Co. She later crushed it for 13 years as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone, before Lily Tomlin made Ernestine cool on SNL. Helen was also a highly organized homemaker with laundry day on Monday, sheets and towels on Tuesday, errands and groceries on Wednesday, Mother/Daughter on Thursday, and house cleaning on Friday.
Helen was a founding member of Sonrise of Aboite Methodist Church and along with Norm did many woodworking projects for the interior of the church.
She had a variety of interests that enriched her life. Helen was a lifelong fan of the Fort Wayne Komets, holding season tickets for over 25 years. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to Treasure Island, Fla., and Mackinac Island, Mich., as well as longer trips to Alaska, Hawaii, the Canadian Rockies, and the American West with friends. Helen was an avid football fan and enjoyed solving expert-level Sudoku puzzles, coloring, and creations using yarn. Her involvement in her daughter Diane’s school activities, especially as the band manager who would find an MIA shoe before a show, or words of encouragement and hugs to the students and the Director when he was stressing out at Homestead High School were always apprecated. These years brought her great joy. Helen was also stubborn and didn't let Alzheimer's control her life by continuing to attend Komet games, dine out, travel, smile, and laugh until the very end.
Helen is survived by her truly incredible daughter, Diane Current; her cherished furbaby, Chiclet; and Grandcats, Gilbert, Sara, Lily, Tiger, and Danny; sister, Mary Larr; and many loving nieces and nephews, including the odd one. Known for being quiet but with a quick wit and kind spirit, Helen was a source of strength and encouragement to all who knew her. She was preceeded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Norman Eugene Current; her parents, Lorraine (née Lambert) Brown and Glenn Brown; and her little brother, Robert "Bobby" LeRoy Brown, who served in the U.S. Navy.
Funeral Service is 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Sonrise Church, 10125 Illinois Rd, Fort Wayne with calling one hour prior. Friends will also be received 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, September 13 at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Covington Knolls, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne.
