Born in Valparaiso, Indiana, to Irv and Laura Bernhart, Jim grew up with a sharp mind, steady character, and a confidence that would define his life. He graduated from Valparaiso High School, proudly serving as drum major — a role that reflected both his leadership and his love of music. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Valparaiso University and later a Master’s degree from Purdue University.
It was during college that Jim met the love of his life, Linda Cutter. As the story goes, he repeatedly (and “accidentally”) tapped a beautiful blonde saxophonist in the back of the head with his trombone during rehearsal. Whether fate or persistence, it worked. Jim married Linda in 1967, beginning a 58-year partnership. Linda preceded him in death in August 2025 — a deep loss he carried with quiet dignity.
Together, Jim and Linda built a life filled with adventure and friendship. They loved to travel and were accomplished snow skiers, treasuring annual trips to Park City, Utah, with a group who became lifelong friends. Jim often said his greatest joy was standing atop a mountain, taking in the views that stretched for hundreds of miles in every direction.
Professionally, Jim dedicated 37 years to Raytheon as a Software Systems Engineer. His brilliant mind contributed to projects spanning aerospace, biotechnology, automotive, and manufacturing industries. He approached his work with integrity, curiosity, and excellence.
Yet Jim’s truest legacy was found in his faith and service. A devoted member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, he served as an elder, on the Board of Lay Leaders, and as president of the congregation. He lived his faith not loudly, but faithfully — through commitment, humility, and steadfast presence.
Jim is survived by his siblings, Carol (Mike) Barnard and brother Phil (Debbie) Bernhart; and by his nieces and nephews, Mike (Tammy) Barnard, Chris (Tina) Butler, Rob (Jen) Barnard, Jenny Bernhart, and Jon (Terra) Bernhart.
