

Dr. James J. (Jim) Harris, 80, long-time resident of Fort Wayne, passed away Tuesday, July 24th at his summer home at Coldwater Lake, Michigan. Jim was born February 18, 1938 in Fort Wayne to John and Mary Elizabeth (Estes) Harris. Jim was a family medicine physician in Fort Wayne for over 40 years with First Care Family Physicians and later Parkview Physicians Group. Jim attended Central High School and graduated from Jefferson Center High School in 1956. Jim married Sharon (Michaud) Harris in Fort Wayne on June 15, 1963. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1966 and served in the United States Air Force as a Medical Officer at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine in 1967-1968 and Phang Rang, Vietnam in 1968-1969. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Vietnam. Jim was a 50-year member of the Fort Wayne Medical Society and served in various leadership roles over the years including Chairman of the Parkview Executive Committee, President of the Iyopawa Island Association (Coldwater Lake, MI) and President of the Sun Seekers Club (Destin, FL). Jim was a loyal husband and cherished time with his kids and grandkids. Jim also treasured his patients both during and after his medical career. Jim was an avid reader, IU fan, enjoyed playing bridge and loved a good joke. Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years Sharon, son Brent (Susan), daughters Jill (Jeff) Schwarz, Amy (Mark) Welker, grandchildren Elaina, Gretchen and Alec Harris, Madison and Andrew Schwarz, and Mia and Mack Welker and siblings Steve (Di) Harris, Mike (Betsy) Harris, John (Betty) Harris, Candy (Bob) Bohlender, Tom (Barbara) Harris, Philip (Monica) Harris, Tim (Johanna) Harris and Julie (Mike) Harris. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother David Harris.Visitation will take place at D.O. McComb & Son Funeral Home- Pine Valley, 1320 E. Dupont Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana on Friday, July 27th from 4:30-6:30 pm and 7:30-9pm. A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Saturday, July 28th at 3pm at Church of the Covenant, 10001 Coldwater Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana, with calling 1 hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Highland Park Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Turnstone Center for Adults and Children with Disabilities or United Methodist Church of the Covenant.
