James "Jim" W. Slate

James "Jim" W. Slate, 90, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Visiting Nurse in Fort Wayne. Born in Marshalltown, IA, Jim was a salesman with A.F. Schuermann in Cincinnati, retiring in 1992. He was a member of The Chapel and served honorably in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Japan in 1947 as part of the Occupation Force and 1st Calvary Division Rifle Team. Jim was also a past Shriner. He enjoyed boating, specifically on Lake Tippecanoe, sports cars, NASCAR and traveling. He was a loving family man and he will be missed greatly. Surviving are his beloved wife of 50 years, Sandra J. Slate of Fort Wayne; sons, Michael Slate of Las Vegas, NV, Edward (Terri) Eckels of Leo, IN, and Steven (Jenifer Peterson) Slate of Fort Wayne; daughters, Kellie (Alan) Vitcavage of Hallowell, ME and Denise Bliss of Phoenix, AZ; 9 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother-in-law, Michael (Irene) Harris of Fort Wayne; and sister-in-law, Karen Raupfer of Fort Wayne. Jim was preceded in death by father, Clinton Slate; mother, Mollie Slate; brother, Amos Eli Slate; sister, Hazel Ream; and brother-in-law, Donald Raupfer. Service is 10:00 am, Thursday, July 19, 2018 at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Avenue with Gary Endersby officiating with one hour of calling prior to the service.
