JOHN L. CAMPBELL SR., 86, of Fort Wayne, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011. "His journey is complete." Born on a farm on March 8, 1925, in Kirklin, Ind., he was the son of the late Leonard and Jerrine Campbell. After a stint in the Navy during World War II, he graduated with Degree in Education from Ball State University. He taught and coached for 35 years. He coached the LaGrange Lions to a basketball sectional championship in 1954. He soon moved to Fort Wayne where he taught in Fort Wayne and East Allen Community School systems for the remainder of his career, retiring from Heritage High School in 1985. He was a man who enjoyed and embraced life. He loved his students, his players and his fellow teachers. He was a longtime member of the Shrine and enjoyed several years as a member of the Foot Patrol. An avid golfer, his six holes in one and two double eagles will be hard to replace on all the scrambles he was invited to play. But beyond the teaching and beyond the golf, his greatest joy was his family. Immediate and extended, there weren't too many events that he failed to attend. He always put everyone else first and that was the way it had to be. "He will be greatly missed." Surviving are his three children, John Jr. (Janice) Campbell of Fort Wayne, Sarah (Garry) Vickers of Dayton, Ohio and David (Laurie) Campbell of Fishers, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Mary F. Neumeyer; and brother, Richard Campbell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Barbara. Service is 11 a.m. Friday at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, Winchester Road Chapel, 6424 Winchester Road, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be given in his memory to Waynedale United Methodist Church; Parkview Home Health & Hospice; or Shriner's Hospitals for Children. www. klaehnfahlmeltonfunerals.com
