Jorene Heiny, 82, of Fort Wayne, Indiana died peacefully on Saturday, July 23rd. Jorene was born in Wichita, Kansas on August 21, 1933 to Mae and Gerald Boyles. She attended Wichita East High School and Wichita State University. She lived in a number of states throughout her life, but called Fort Wayne, Indiana home. It was there she married Thomas R. Heiny and created a blended family with 5 children: Scott Hedeen, Chris Heiny, Marla Umstead, Dan Heiny and Kara Johnson. Jorene enjoyed landscaping, entertaining, cooking, decorating, friends, and music---singing in numerous choirs and often at parties with friends. She did volunteer work and also served as Treasurer at Tom Heiny and Associates. In earlier years, she loved her job as Secretary at Harris Elementary School in Fort Wayne. Jorene loved family and took great pride in her kids and particularly her grandkids, Brandan and Garrat Johnson of Auburn, California. In addition to Fort Wayne, the family spent many happy years at Lake Tippecanoe in Indiana with extended family and friends. Jorene was preceded in death by Thomas R Heiny of Fort Wayne and her son, Scott Hedeen of Dothan, Alabama. She is survived by her children: Chris Heiny of Fort Wayne, Marla (Kevin) Umstead of Weare, NH; Dan (Scot) Heiny of Fort Wayne; and Kara (Dan) Johnson of Auburn, CA. Jorene is also survived by her close sister, BJ Ackerman of Georgetown, Texas and by a nephew, nieces and grandchildren. The family gives immense thanks the staff of Heartland Hospice of Fort Wayne for providing our mother with such compassionate care. Thanks also to the staff at Sage Bluff in Fort Wayne for providing wonderful support for our mother. It was the thoughtfulness of these people that gave her such ease and comfort at the end. As we said, Jorene (our Mom) loved gardening and flowers, but for some reason did not like gladiolas. When the kids were young, but able to understand what a funeral was, she always said: "I do not want gladiolas at my funeral." We had no idea what they were, but we knew she didn't like them! For anyone kind enough to send flowers, we kindly (and with humor) ask you to take up the cause and keep the event gladiola-free. Service is 2:00 pm, Friday, August 5, 2016 at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Rd with calling 2 hours prior beginning at 12:00 noon. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Heartland Hospice.
