Joseph M. van Ackeren, 73, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was called home by the Lord on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. He passed peacefully at home with his beloved wife, Jennifer and his adored Yorkie Oliver, by his side. Born on September 20, 1950, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Shirley (Smith) and the late Joseph A. van Ackeren. Joe spent childhood years living in Chili and Brazil, as his father was working there. After graduating from Upper St Clair High School (Pennsylvania) in1969, he studied at the University of Ohio. Joe would eventually spend the majority of his career, forming relationships and bonds with customers and co-workers at Superior Essex. Relocating many times with Superior Essex he eventually landed in Fort Wayne where he met his best friend, soul mate and wife, Jennifer. After retiring in 2015 Joe was able to spend more time enjoying his many passions. He enjoyed late nights of music and western movies. His weekends were spent watching golf and football but most of all he valued the company of his family and friends. When you were with Joe you could always be sure of a good conversation, he was full of knowledge, advice and above all true love and compassion for those around him, as his good friend Eliot can attest too. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Jennifer; his mother, Shirley; his son, Zach (Maigan) van Ackeren; stepchildren, Kevin (Belvia) Gray and Rachel Gray; his grandchildren, Emory and Owen van Ackeren; and his step grandchild, Addyson Gray. A cherished individual known for his kind, loving and caring personality his departure leaves a void in our lives, yet we find comfort in the memories and everlasting love we shared. To honor Joe's wishes, there will be no funeral services. You are invited to celebrate Joe's legacy by sharing memories of Joe in the digital guest book. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to Humane Fort Wayne, humanefw.org, a cause Joe felt strongly about.
