Juanita Joyce Baxter, lovingly known as NeDe, was born on May 18, 1932, in Marshallville, Ohio, and passed away at the age of 93. She lived a life filled with joy, warmth, and a spirit that made others feel welcome and loved. Her laughter, her kindness, and her ability to bring fun into everyday moments will be remembered by all who knew her.
Juanita married James “Jim” Baxter, and together they made their home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, building a life grounded in love, family, and deep faith. Her love for God guided her throughout her life, shaping the way she cared for others and the gentle grace she carried into every room.
She devoted many years to teaching preschool at First Missionary Church Nursery School and Waynedale United Methodist Church, where she touched countless young lives. Her patience, creativity, and genuine affection for children made her a beloved teacher and mentor. Teaching was not just her profession—it was her calling.
Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, Randall and Roberta Etling; her husband, Jim Baxter; her brother, Theodore (Ted) Etling; and her son, Robert (Bobby) Baxter.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Jeff and Tami Baxter; her sister in law, Barrie Etling; nephew Ted Etling, five grandchildren—Brian (Cami) Snyder, Melissa (Shane) Styhl, Seth (Kelly) Baxter, Jessica (Sawyer) Baxter, and Sam (Katelynn) Baxter; and eight great grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date, to be announced.
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the children she taught, and the many lives she brightened simply by being herself.
Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Koemen Breast Cancer Foundation.
