It is with great sorrow that our family announces the passing of Lucy Mae Smith, age 92, on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 after living a long, fulfilled life. Loved ones were with her as she made her peaceful transition.
Lucy was born in Newbern, Alabama and traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana by way of Cincinnati, Ohio at a young age. Even though she was up North (as Lucy used to say) Alabama was always home. Lucy was known “for speaking her mind” and everyone who knew her respected that about her.
Her husband, James E. Smith Jr., two sisters, Alberta Myatt and Mattie Blasingame, and recently her son, Bernard Jones, all preceded Lucy Mae in death. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Vivian Bradley and Grenna Jones; son, Nathaniel Dickey; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by a special angel and friend to Lucy, Sherry Ridley, along with a host of other relatives and friends that loved and cared for her. Please keep the family of Lucy Mae Smith in your thoughts and prayers.
In respect for Lucy, and the family’s wishes, there will be a time to say goodbye for immediate family members and close friends only. This will be on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home located at 6750 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46804. A private burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. You are welcome to join us afterwards for the repast and to share your memories of Lucy, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the home of Lucy’s daughter, Vivian Bradley.
