Robert was a graduate of Central High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana and United States Army Veteran of World War II, stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
After an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army, Robert worked for the Indiana Michigan Power Co. in the Fort Wayne division. Robert retired as the Garage Supervisor in the early 1980’s with nearly 40 years of employment with I&M.
During this same time Robert married his wife, Helen Gunder. Helen and Robert were married in 1948, and had two children. They were faithfully committed and inseparable for over 60 years; together through everything and an example and inspiration of how two people always loved, supported, and cared for each other.
Robert was a loving and supportive father and grandfather. He loved having his children and grandchildren around. Robert was a thoughtful and devoted friend to many.
Robert joined the Perry Township Huntertown Volunteer Fire Department in 1959. He was instrumental in the creation of policies, procedures and protocols that would guide not only the Huntertown Fire Department, but also many of the surrounding departments for years to come. Robert held many positions within the department, including his rank as Chief from 1977 until 1983, and again from 1986 to 1987. Robert spent nearly 20 years as a chief officer with the department. After 63 years, Robert is Huntertown’s longest serving member holding the classification of Active Fire Fighter for that duration. Robert never officially retired from the department.
He is a founding member of the Allen County Fire Arson Specialized Team (FAST) and a Charter member of the Fort Wayne Firefighters Museum.
Surviving are his daughter, Deborah (Bremer) Pongratz; son, David (Rhonda (Walcutt)) Bremer; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Helen Bremer; and son-in-law, Douglas Pongratz.
