

SAMUEL B. "SAM" GREGORY JR., 85, of Fort Wayne, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Sage Bluff Nursing Home, Fort Wayne. Born May 11, 1930, in Altoona, Pa., he was a son of the late Elizabeth McKean Gregory and Samuel B. Gregory Sr. The family moved to Fort Wayne from Cleveland, Ohio where his father was an insurance agent for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. They had resided in Fort Wayne, since arriving in 1932, when his father was appointed as General Agent for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. Sam Jr., graduated from Howe Military School in 1947 and Indiana University in 1951 with a Business Degree majoring in Insurance. He was a member of the Acacia Fraternity on campus in Bloomington, Ind. Upon graduation, he entered the life insurance business with his father and contracted with the Penn Mutual continuing to his death. During his career, he obtained the CLU designation (Chartered Life Underwriter), the ChFC (Charter Financial Consultant), and the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) and obtained his Principle license as a Security Representative. Sam and his brother Ross served as General Agents for Penn Mutual until 1981 when the Penn Mutual closed the General Agency and merged with the Indianapolis office. He was a partner in Gregory, Zent and Swanson Investment Corporation until the entity was closed in 2012. Sam was a past president of the Local Chapter of Life Underwriters, past Board Member of the Fort Wayne Estate Planning Group and a life member of the MDRT (Million Dollar Round Table). He was a Charter member of the Fort Wayne Sertoma Club in addition to being its President. He was President of the Allen County Parks & Recreation Board for 20 years. He was the owner of Gregory-Shaw Financial Inc. as well as President and owner of Financial Profile Systems. He was an active member of Trinity English Lutheran Church, member of the Waynedale Mason Lodge (formally South Gate), Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shriners. He was a past commodore of the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club located on South Bass Island on Lake Erie. His main hobby, other than working, was cruising with his wife Connie on the Great Lakes in his 43' Gulf Star Trawler. Surviving are his wife, Constance K. Gregory; two sons, Samuel B. Gregory III of Silverthorne, Colo. and Thomas K. (Linda) Gregory of Lynchburg, Va.; grandchildren, Katelyn (Tyler) Molitor and William Gregory; great-grandson, Bailey Sprecher; sister-in-law, Barbara Gregory; and nephew, Ross "Mac" (Lesa) Gregory Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ross Gregory Sr.; and niece, Stacey Decker. Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at Trinity English Lutheran Church, with calling from 9 to 11 a.m. Entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity English Lutheran Church, Allen County Parks & Recreation (Fox Island or Metea Parks) or SCAN Inc (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect).
