Sharlene Sue (née Carey) Gruwell was bom November 2, 1935 in Fort Wayne, Ind. passed away on January 31, at the home of her niece, April Sell. She was the eldest of four children of Herman and Neva Carey. Sharlene spent her elementary years in Detroit, Mich. before moving back to Indiana and graduating from South Whitley High School in 1954. She met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Gruwell, when the new baker's son moved to South Whitley. They wed October 20, 1956. After raising three boys in South Whitley, they moved to Fort Wayne and bought the Waynedale Bakery. Bob preceded her in death in 2008. Sharlene's number one priority was her family and she loved them dearly. Sharlene is survived by her sons, Mark (Janet) Gruwell of Ekhart, Ind.; Richard Gruwell of Fort Wayne, and Thomas (Kristine) Gruwell of LaOtto, Ind.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Gruwell of Pierceton, Ind., Melissa Gruwell of South Whitley, Nicolas (Jessica) Gruwell of Fort Wayne, Trent (Presley) Gruwell of Noblesville, Ind., and Rebecca Gruwell Chamorro and Juan Chamorro of Guatemala; four great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Parker of Fort Wayne, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, James Carey and John Carey. Sharlene also leaves many long time friends and new friends met through her travels with Bob and even through having a conversation with a person on the other end of a wrong number; that was Sharlene. She loved to talk and made friends with everyone. Memorial Contributions may be directed to Stillwater Hospice, 5910 Homestead Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46814. Arrangements entrusted to Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services - Highland Park. Celebration of Life is 2:00 - 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 4 at Cultivate Church, 500 S Main St, LaOtto, Ind. Interment in South Whitley Cemetery.
