Susannah Elaine St. Christopher departed this life for her heavenly home on March 10, 2025. Susannah is survived by her three children, Jennifer Wedge (Timothy), Brett Medley (Christina), and Craig Medley (Christy, dec.). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father, Donald Kelly Dews, in 1977; her mother, Agatha Louraine Tieben, in 2023; and her daughter-in-law, Christy Medley, in 2023.
Susannah was born in Lafayette, Indiana on July 17, 1948. She loved cleaning, spoiling her loved ones with special gifts, and taking road trips with her daughter Jennifer. Susannah worked as a secretary for years, but her heart was never in paid employment. Instead, she spent the great majority of her life helping others, and she adamantly refused to take a dime for her hard work. She was a deeply spiritual person and truly exemplified the meaning of James 1:22-24, “But be ye doers of the word, not just hearers.” Susannah put her faith into action and became the hands and feet of Jesus on this earth. She was very appropriately named Susannah St. Christopher (the patron saint of travel) because she loved traveling, seeing different sights, and meeting new people. Even though Susannah was a wanderer at heart, she would immediately drop everything, cancel plans, and happily stay in one place for months or even years if a loved one needed her help.
Susannah was incredibly proud of her three children and their accomplishments, and didn’t hesitate to boast about them. Even though her children are well into their adulthood, she never stopped looking after them. Susannah wasn’t afraid to text her daughter Jennifer’s friends on the sly to make sure that Jennifer wasn’t working too hard, resting too little, or not practicing self-care. She was a mom to the very end, even throughout her illness.
One of the truly beautiful things about Susannah was her knack for anticipating needs. She often gave people just what they needed, and just when they needed it, as if Jesus were whispering in her ear. She was an oasis in the desert and a lighthouse in the storm. She had a special heart for babies, older people, animals, and everyone in between. In a world where empathy, mercy, and compassion are scoffed at as weaknesses, Susannah was living proof that those qualities are not weaknesses but are strengths. Amidst all the meanness, turmoil, and hatred, she never failed to walk in love, easing pain and making life so much brighter for everyone who crossed her path.
There was much to love and admire about Susannah. She was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, daughter, and friend. Her kindness, warmth, humor, and generosity were simply immeasurable. She had a big smile and a heart of gold. The world lost a bright ray of sunshine on March 10, 2025, when our favorite traveler took her final journey. Susannah will be dearly missed by her family, her friends, and the four-footed creatures in her household. She cared so lovingly for all of us. It is heartbreaking to lose her, but we have no doubt in our hearts that Susannah was welcomed into her heavenly home with the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
