Alicia, Mr. and Mrs. Butz, and family—I was so saddened to hear about the loss of Ted. I remember thinking Alicia was lucky to grow up with such funny and cool older brothers. You have such a wonderful family and I know that you will find comfort in each other during this unimaginable loss. I have you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Growing up in the Bittersweet neighborhood of Fort Wayne in the 1980s meant knowing Ted, and the whole Butz family. My family moved there around 1980 or 1981 and I have so many memories of the Butz house, that cul-de-sac, the lake, and the adventures us Bittersweet kids manufactured for ourselves during long summer days and short after-school afternoons.  First among the memories are that smile - Ted's smile. Really it was a smirk. We all know the one. The photos posted in his remembrance here highlight it, but even without the photos I can see it 35+ years later. And behind that smile/smirk was a kindness and humility that anyone would be lucky to have in a childhood friend, a son, a sibling. 

My thoughts are with you, Butz family, friends, colleagues and classmates as we remember Ted. I know I was lucky to know him.

A chaotic but fun family "get-together " with Ted and his cousins.

My senior year in high school I might have played Sega Hockey with Ted Butz more than I did anything else. Ted, Jake Cable and I would hunker down in his basement and play game after game after game late into the night, cheering on Tony Amonte or Jaromir Jagr until our thumbs were too sore to move.
We played soccer together for years when he might have been the shortest player on the field but commanded his space like a giant and got the biggest laughs. He was kind of a class clown, always making faces and cracking people up.
Ted introduced me to the music of Black Flag, Jethro Tull and the entire Led Zeppelin collection, rocking out in his bedroom with an audiophile’s sound system that shook the walls until Ted’s mom called upstairs to turn it down.
He used to pick me up in this huge Oldsmobile from the 1970s that would not start, by some mechanical quirk, until I sat up in the passenger seat. I recall one summer evening when he decided to let his little sister practice driving and take me home. She could hardly see over the steering wheel, at 14, when we passed a cop car in his own neighborhood who then turned around, flashed his lights and pulled us over. Ted jumped out of the car wanting to explain himself as the cops pointed their guns at him. Because his dad was also a cop, we got off with a warning.
I went to prom with my girlfriend Shaina and double-dated with Ted and his date. I planned to have a party afterwards and my parents even provided snacks and alcohol, but no one came except my girlfriend and Ted. He was a good friend, better than I was a friend to him.
After high school we lost touch. The last time I saw him was at a bar in Fort Wayne where he was both happy to see me and pissed off - calling me Mr. Big Shot because I had gone to Europe and was writing poetry, then confessing privately to me that he too wrote poems. I regretted how we interacted that last time and wished I had told him how good a friend he had been. He will be missed. RIP

To Teds family: I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Ted that well, he had only worked with us for a short period. I hope he has found the peace he was so looking for.
