Wilbur (Will) George Searer, 97, of Churubusco, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on May 29, 2023 after a brief illness. He was predeceased in 2006 by the love of his life, his wife of 48 years, Wordie Marie (Younis) of Albion, IN and is survived by his daughter, Tamara (Searer-Jenkins), and son-in-law, Rick (Jenkins) as well as a host of beloved family members and friends. Born in North Manchester, Indiana, on April 19, 1926, Will grew to maturity in this small town, close to nature and the wholesome adventures young boys created for themselves in those days.
Upon high school graduation in 1944, Will enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. When he returned home, he earned a Bachelor’s in Education from Manchester College and obtained his Master’s in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Denver. He had a distinguished career and held the position of Supervisor of Speech Language Pathology for Fort Wayne Community Schools until his retirement in 1991.
Living alone after Wordie died, Will maintained his home and 14-acre woods until the end of his life. He was a lifelong birder and participated annually in the Great American Bird Count into his 90s. He was known for his concern for all of mankind and his devotion to the environment. Will appreciated classical music, enjoyed attending Fort Wayne Philharmonic concerts, gardening and traveling. He was actively involved in the life of the church, serving as a church officer, committee member and attending weekly Men’s Bible Study and Current Events classes.
Will left this life on his own terms, asking that life support be withdrawn when he knew there was no chance that his health would improve.
Visitation will be at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1811 Fairhill Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46808, on Friday, June 16 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 17 at 11 a.m. with Special Prelude Music at 10:45 a.m.
