Betty was born Sept. 21, 1929, in Greenville to Albert L. and Mae Bowman McConnell. Born just before the Depression began, she lived in Corsicana, Hillsboro, Waco, Roswell, N.M., and Dallas before graduating from high school in Pleasant Grove in 1946. After attending Texas Christian University where she met her husband, Billy Jack, she graduated from North Texas State Teachers College, now UNT, in Denton. She taught fourth grade at D. McRae Elementary during the 1950s and completed course work for a master's in education at Texas Wesleyan College. Although she gave up teaching to raise her daughter, she loved teaching children and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years at Meadowbrook Baptist Church and then at Handley Baptist, where she was a member for over 45 years. She was also involved in PTA at E. Handley Elementary where she served as president, historian and carnival chairman. She also volunteered as a Bluebirds and Camp Fire Girls leader. She enjoyed collecting trivets and sad irons; a passion shared by her husband. A big thrill was the birth of her grandson, Jake. A day never passed that she did not ask about his adventures. Betty was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors: Her husband of 61 years, Billy Jack Lusk; daughter Melinda Coalson and husband, John, of Irving; grandson, Jake; stepgranddaughters, Megan of Tongliao, Mongolia, and Kaitlin of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother, Richard McConnell and wife, Carolyn, of Benbrook; several nieces; a nephew; and many dear family members and friends.
