Boyd was born in Purcell, Oklahoma, on April 16, 1954, to Leonard and Billie Faye Fox Keith. Boyd and his sister, Cheryl were raised in Washington, Oklahoma. From a young age, Boyd worked at his parent’s grocery store. Later, Boyd was active in athletics at Washington High School, where he graduated in 1972. Boyd prized country and western music—he sang, played the guitar and bass and performed with local Oklahoma musicians and groups.
Boyd married Dru Legate in 1988. In 1992, after many years of living in Washington, Boyd and his family moved to Oklahoma City. Boyd had a long career with Westinghouse, which later became York. He retired from York in 1999 and moved to Midland, Texas in 2000. Boyd worked for the Midland County Library for 10 years—he was well respected by his co-workers and library patrons. Working at the library suited Boyd because he was an avid reader, especially treasuring historical fiction and biographies. Boyd also enjoyed being physically active outdoors, especially in majestic settings—he jogged and spent his vacations hiking with his family in the mountains of Colorado. Boyd was also a faithful Christian and was dedicated to his church and bible studies, even during difficult periods in his lifetime.
In 2013 Boyd was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He underwent two stem-cell transplants and courageously resisted the disease for five years while making the most of his time with his cherished family and loved ones. Boyd and Dru moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in the summer of 2017. In early March 2018, with family by his bedside, Boyd peacefully passed away at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.
Boyd was a devoted father and husband and will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Dru Keith, his children and their spouses, Kelly Keith Milligan (Charles), Kyle (Kristina) and Steven. Boyd will also be remembered by his father, Leonard Keith, Boyd’s sister, Cheryl Keith DeFries, and his seven grandchildren, Preston, Parker, Julia, Kyle Jr., Ryan, Cody, and Johnny. Boyd was predeceased by his mother, Billie Faye Fox Keith. Family members and friends will dearly miss Boyd’s positive sense of humor and his at-ease personality.
