Born December 11, 1956, in Fort Worth, TX, to mother, Annie Ervin Hodges, father, Seeley Hodges, and protective older sister, Jeanette Hodges, Charles graduated from Paschal High School and the University of North Texas with a BA in journalism. He was a proud Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brother and traveled abroad twice with his many friends to explore Europe. He then attended TCU to study for his master’s degree in communications but instead met the love of his life, Sharon.
After their marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ridgefield, CT, on June 29, 1985, they settled in East Fort Worth where he began his 30-year career in public relations and advertising with marketing firms GSD&M, LM&S, and MARC USA. He later worked directly with RadioShack and GameStop within their corporate communications offices. He was most proud of his work with clients Poulan Chainsaws and Weed Eater where he played a vital role in marketing for the annual delivery of the US Capitol Christmas Tree and introducing autonomous lawn mowers to the world.
Charles’ universe changed with the arrival of his two sons, Gregory and Nicholas. Being an involved father was his most spectacular ability. From bi-annual spring break trips to Disney World, countless baseball games, boy scout camping trips, Eagle Scout projects, and everything in between, Charles was always there for his boys. A proud Horned Frog, he even traded hats and became a Texas Longhorn when one and then both kids headed off to UT-Austin.
For the past 14 years, Charles worked as a director within Fort Worth ISD and was enthusiastic about facilitating community resource support for East Side students, families, and residents. He served on the board of several organizations, including the East Fort Worth Business Association and Keep Fort Worth Beautiful. He also dedicated a significant amount of passion to the Breakfast Optimist Club of East Fort Worth, serving as president from 2018-2020 and more recently on the board of directors. He was twice awarded Optimist of the Year, which illustrated his life’s commitment to serve East Fort Worth and his capacity as a tremendous source of smiles and happiness.
To his now adult sons, Charles was always a constant sounding board of advice, incredible golfing partner, and cross-country mover. He traveled to Connecticut, Alaska, and California to help them both settle into new lives, but Texas has always and will always be home. To his two year old grandson, Lucas, Charles proudly took the name Papi and continued his calling as an incredible mentor and napping buddy. His love and laughter will be missed greatly, but his memory will be a guiding light for everyone that he touched.
Charles is survived by his wife, Sharon; their children, Nicholas and Gregory; their daughter-in-law, Natalie; their grandson, Lucas; and his sister, Jeanette.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Annie and Seeley.
Memorial contributions may be made in Charles’ name and mailed to the Breakfast Optimist Club of East Fort Worth Foundation 501(c)(3): BEFWO Foundation, 1950 Rockbrook Ct, Fort Worth, TX 76112.
