

David McMillion passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 12, 2025.David, whose journey from a humble farm in Midlothian to a distinguished military career serves as an enduring source of inspiration. He was born in Midlothian on November 20, 1937 to Lilly Mae (Golden) and James Wramer McMillion, hardworking and humble farmers. He was the fourth of six siblings (Vera, Mary, Wayne, Ann and Helen). David received Bachelor and Master of Education degrees from Sam Houston State University and went on to have a very distinguished career serving more than 20 years in the US Army and received awards and commendations that included the Bronze Star with three oak leaf clusters and a Purple Heart. He served in numerous leadership roles in the Army including tours at the Pentagon, and in Germany and Vietnam and achieved the rank of full bird Colonel. He attended numerous courses in the Army that included the Command and General Staff College where he graduated on the Commandants List.
After his distinguished Army Career, he served as Director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) for 14 years. He led the state’s response to multiple disasters and Homeland Security activities for the entire State of Maryland. He was also Department Director with the DC Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s (COG.) His is the former President and a Life Member of the National Emergency Management Association(NEMA) and continued to serve on the Past Presidents Committee and the Preparedness Committee.
His distinguished career instilled in him a fitness regimen that included daily 5mile walks, bike rides and regular visits to the gym. He loved to travel with his partner Cheryl Williams and their trips always included a walking or biking tours.
He lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland after retiring from the Army and loved spending time with his nephew Charles and his wife Marilyn. His pride and joy were his family in Texas where he loved to spend Christmas with more than thirty McMillion family members gathering for a lovely holiday lunch and sharing memories of the years gone by.
He moved to Crowley, Texas to look after his sister Mary Lou Walls and he enjoyed working on his 11-acre property going back to his farming roots. He planted six beautiful fruit trees for each of his six great grandkids and said this was a legacy he would like to leave them where they could come and enjoy the fruits of his labor. His greatest sense of pride was coming over for his son Gary’s CPA practice (McMillion & Grove CPA) ribbon cutting by the chamber of commerce which Gary established with his longtime friend Johan Grove.
He leaves behind his son Gary, daughter-in-law Sandya, daughter Kathy, granddaughter Michelle, , her husband Charles Howard ,great- grandchildren Cayden, Trystin, Ryleigh, grandson Justin McMillion, wife Morgan and grandchildren Kaylee, Kinzlee, Greyson. He was very close to his nieces (Susan, Cylinda, Tish, Sherry, Karen, Debbie) and nephews (Charles, Jimmy, Todd).
His family Invites relatives and friends to a celebration of David McMillion’s life on Monday, April 21, 6 to 8 pm for Visitations and Funeral service on April 22, Tuesday, 10 am to noon at Laurel Land Funeral home in Crowley, Texas.
The family deeply appreciates the outpouring of love, prayers and support as we celebrate David and his distinguished service to his country and the legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Donations can be offered to American Cancer Society or Miriam’s Kitchen based in Washington DC in lieu of Flowers.
