Dorothy Jean Allen

She was the very last of her generation in this family. Born and raised in Ft. Worth she was a “Child of the Depression” and World War II. Graduated from Paschal High School in Ft. Worth in 1944. There were only eleven grades in school then and the school district suspended the final semester so the students could join the military. While in school and before getting married she had a few jobs, one of which was pulling merchandise at the old Montgomery Wards warehouse on 7th Street in Ft. Worth. The work was done on roller skates.

Married: April 16, 1945 to James W. Allen until his death in November 1998.

As most young marrieds then, her and dad wasted little time starting a family.

Children: Jerry Allen, Penny Cudabac, Toni Vos, and Jay Allen (deceased).

Mom and dad were active members of MacArthur Blvd. Baptist Church in Irving where Mom worked with preschoolers and later Hallmark Baptist Church in Ft. Worth.

Mom was retired from Ling-Temco-Vought where she was a proud member of the United Auto Workers and a true “Rosie the Riveter” working in the belly of Military aircraft welding parts together.

She lived long enough to see 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

We didn’t have a lot growing up, but mom was a pretty good cook who specialized in fried chicken, homemade hamburgers, roast beef, beef stew, and chicken casserole. Sunday nights after Church, we often had hot dogs where to conserve cash; the frank was cut in half length wise and served on a piece of white bread.

Mom loved trips to Las Vegas and visiting with family.

She was a small woman, five foot nothing and seldom over 100 lbs., but she had a big heart. She could be generous to a fault. She was always kind and gentle and never cruel, unless you count the time when she said “just wait till your daddy gets home”.

She loved and was loved. We will all miss her.
