She was born November 4, 1919, in Humphreys County, TN to her mother, Virginia Buchanan Cagle. She was preceded in death by her late husbands, Raymond L. Lewis and Joseph O. Heitman, her sister Mary Buchanan, daughter Marjorie Heinzerling, and daughter-in-law Judith Coolidge Lewis.
Gladys was adopted by James Hart and Istalena Johnson and remained with them until her marriage to Raymond Lewis in 1943.
Faith, family and friends were the most important things in her life. She never knew a stranger and would do anything possible to help someone in need. After Gladys married Raymond, they moved to Indiana to start a family, but when her adoptive parents became ill, they temporarily uprooted and moved back to Tennessee to care for them. Even though she was legally blind in one eye, she was an avid reader, an early childhood passion which she continued throughout her life. Gladys worked for many years at Roslyn Bakeries in Indianapolis until relocating to Florida in 1972. After Raymond’s death in 1979, she started working at the Orange Shop in Citra where she worked for 20+ years. She moved to Texas in 2006 where she remained for the rest of her life.
Gladys is survived by three children, Jimmie Lewis, Dennis Lewis (Charlotte Ripley), Paul Lewis (Lelia Lohr), grandchildren; April Lewis (Edward), Gregory Coolidge (Kimberly Reilley), Morgan Stubblefield Broughton (Michael), Josh Stubblefield, Tambi Jo Lewis, Marc Lewis (Bekka Peterson), Josh Lewis (Jeni Kessel), 11 great-grandchildren; Kristen Peebles, Mathew Peebles, Lance Peebles, Reilley Grace Coolidge, Grayson Lewis Coolidge, Sloane Rippard, Gavin Soloman, Oakley Lewis, Reese Lewis, Aubrie Ansarch, Hudson Lewis, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
