Laverne Henderson Fletcher of Arlington, Texas, passed away on July 1, 2024, at the age of 91. She was born on July 17, 1932, in Grandview, Texas, grew up in nearby Itasca, and lived in Fort Worth for over 70 years.
She graduated from Itasca High School and Texas Wesleyan College. She went on to work as a church secretary at College Avenue Baptist Church, a Freight Claims Clerk at the S&H Green Stamps Regional Office, and as a Bookkeeper at the Texas Highway Department Credit Union.
Laverne was actively involved in the churches she attended (College Avenue, South Hills and Gambrell Street--all local Baptist Churches). Over the years, she taught Sunday School, helped count Sunday morning offerings, and participated in several Outreach ministries, such as Women’s Missionary Union and Adults on Mission. She loved to read, sew, work in the yard, play 42/dominoes, study the Bible and work puzzles. She was deeply devoted to her family and was known as Nonnie to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She planned family vacations every summer, enjoyed musicals and made the best banana pudding!
She was always taking care of people – those close to her and those who crossed her path, usually serving behind the scenes. In later years she was devoted to taking care of Irvin as his health deteriorated and she was admired and appreciated by his other caregivers.
Laverne was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ida (Hester) Henderson, husband Irvin Fletcher to whom she was married for 63 years, and brothers Wayne, James, George Jr, Joe, and Donald Henderson.
She is survived by her children Tim (Julie) Fletcher of Arlington, Cynthia (Joe) Thomas of Frisco, grandchildren Travis Fletcher of Arlington, Jason Fletcher of Waco, Courtney Thomas of Fayetteville, AR, Matthew (Megan) Thomas and great-grandsons Calvin Thomas & Fletcher Thomas, all of San Luis Obispo, CA. She is also survived by her brother Ernest Henderson, several cousins and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Gambrell Street Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Visitation with the family will be held at Laurel Land Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
Interment to follow at Laurel Land Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her honor to Gambrell Street Baptist Church or Texans on Mission.
