I will never forget how Mark made us all laugh. He and Daryl sitting around the blue table telling stories. They should make a movie about their adventures. We will all miss the the fun Mark brought to our family get togethers.

Mark was alway there to help! When we started out new adventure, Twin Peaks, Mark was there lending a helping hand. From the time the sign went up we could always call on Mark. From fixed running commodes to remodeling the cabin, Mark was my go to. When Fran or I were there alone Mark took the time to stop by and check on us. Our dinner dates at Poker Alice and fixing NaNaw's enchiladas were his only payment most of the time. Mark loved his family and his family loved Mark. We could not have made Twin Peaks what it is without his dedication and love.

Mark spent his summers with us in Lake City. His job was to do whatever Fray needed him to do around Alpine Village. After Mark learned to drive it seemed that every time Fray needed Mark to do something he was always magically gone. Fray gave Mark the nickname "Phantom." Mark and the red scout would be long gone until the girls needed him. He may have been "Phantom" for Fray but he was "DBA" to the girls. Mark was always there for them; getting them in and out of trouble.

Phantom, you will be missed!

I was about 16 when Mark was born.  When his mom and dad would come and visit Curt and Fray I would baby sit with all the kids while the adults went out.  I so remember Mark as a darling chubby little baby.  As he grew so did his sweet personality.  He was always smiling and laughing.  When he and Mike got a little older and they would wrestle like little boys do I would say to Mike...you might as well give up cause you know Mark is going to win.  Mike was much smaller than Mark even though he was older.  Over the years I would see Mark at Christmas and he alway had that same cute smile and cherry disposition.  He was born that way.  He alway made others happy to have him around.  Speaking of around Curtis said when ever Mark was in Lake City and they needed him to do something he would somehow disappear so they called him the phantom. Ha. He would end up helping them when he came back. You made a huge impression on us all Mark.  You were loved a lot.  Love ya, Aunt Susan Coates Mars

The One and Only Markus Moodius

Mark was the older brother (even if only by 4 months) that I never had. I could depend and trust Mark with anything. I knew he had my back no matter what. There are SO many stories from our 57 years that there is no way to narrow it down to one. I will just list a few.

He built a bond fire every night down Henson or Lake San Cristobal so that we could all hang out together after Popcorn Palace.

I could always count on a special box of chocolate creams from Russell Stover every time he made a run to Grand Junction.

He watched the camp fire while we camped out to make sure the fire was still going to keep us warm. There was however, the one time that he fell asleep and we all woke up to his famous words of, Got Damn and saw that his sleeping bag was on fire.

He drove us to Popcorn Palace every night.

He went rafting with us every summer, numerous times a day, and always blew up the tubes so that we would be set to go.

He drove us ALL over Lake City, anytime, anywhere-Round Top was a personal favorite.

He argued with Dad (Curtis) which was pretty funny. No one else had the nerve to do it.

He was ALWAYS happy, which was contagious.

Mark was hilarious! His famous Mark and Daryl stories around the blue table had us in stitches every time, no matter how many times we heard them. The rafting, roller coaster, and gun stories were my fav! My girls will always remember these.

I loved when Mark got excited and slapped his legs, pulled at his shirt and rubbed his hands together.

One of my favorite sayings of his, It's very simple. I find myself saying that often now.

Mark has SO many great qualities that he wasn't even aware he had. When I talked to Don, Shannon, and Katie, we all agreed that besides his stories, he lit up a room and truly cared about everyone. He would do anything for anyone. My girls will never forget (and neither will I) the time Mark jumped up to block me from a personal attack from someone. I think it was then that my girls witnessed Mark's true loyalty to our whole family. We certainly miss him. Lake City will never be the same without him. I am certain of one thing thoughHe and Mom (Mimi) are watching over us all the time. I know that one day we will all meet up again.

I Love You Mark, (aka, The DBA)

Whenever I needed something, especially a tool, I could call Mark up and he would say sure, come and get it! I knew exactly what that meant. the dreaded tool shed! If you knew Mark, organization was not his strong suit.  I enter his sacred place of holy tools, not knowing if I would ever find that tool and get home before dark. I roamed around searching for over an hour with no success. Feeling defeated, I stuck my head out for air, and was looking frantically for Mark. I thought it was hopeless, but then it was like an answered prayer I heard Annette yelling across the grounds, MARRRRK! I knew he was near. I spotted him and quickly grabbed and redirected him to the shed.  I told him what tool I was in need of and in less than two seconds, he retrieves it from under 2 boxes of wires and nails behind the pressure washer. How simple he made it look. Thanks to Mark, I was on my way home with the tool before dark! I joke Marks lack of organization, but I learned more from Mark on how to fix and make things work at our place, Twin Peaks, these last 20 years. Thank you Mark! Love you buddy

The summer I taught Mark to drive a standard in the red scout. After we did our chores at Alpine Village Mark and I would go out on the back road to practice in Fray and Curtis' old red scout. Now, you have to understand that I was no pro myself, so you can imagine Mark and I embarked on a daily adventure of grinding the gears and fearing Curtis would show up! Mark was always ready to go; he would climb into the scout and get set, reviewing each gear. Then with a slight grrrrrrrrrrr..jerking action.. grrrrrrrrrr. jerking action we were off to Silver Street and then down Bluff Street. I bet we drove around and around a 100 times that summer. By the end of the summer, Mark was driving that old red scout like a pro! I think Curtis only had to fix the scout one or two times that summer.

Memories of Mark:  With love

One of my favorite memories is going to the dump with Mark  we would load up the trash from Alpine Village in the back of the red scout, of course making comments and laughing the whole time. Once all the trach was loaded up, off to the dump we went - like it was some wild adventure! Mark would always let me throw the lighter bags into the huge whole of trash, as if it was some awesome thing to do. Those simple times with Mark were so meaningful. He made me feel so special.

One time Mark and I decided to scare my sisters. Mark had this super scary mask, so the plan was for him to come in the back door of the house, which no one used, and go into the girls' room and make them scream!  Mark sunk out of the house and went around to the back door, which I had unlocked. The plan was coming together! Mark made a bunch of nose as he came in the back door so he would wake everyone up. As Mark came around to the hall I was peeping over the edge from my room above (FYI - I am terrified of masks and Mark does not know this). All the sudden Mark looks up with this big scary mask staring right at me and starts to come up the stairs! Well I freaked!!!!! I lost it!!!! I started screaming, No Mark! Don't come up here! Please Mark! No! No Mark! Well at that point the gig was up, so much for our grand plan, the only person who was screaming was me. 

I also learned how to drive a stick shift in Marks jeep, yes his beloved, pride-n-joy, stereo blaring jeep. Mark had a baseball game, at the original baseball field outside of town across the stream. He took Jason and I with him as his cheering section. Jason's nose started to bleed and we couldn't get it to stop. Well, Mark could not leave the game so he told me to drive Jason back. With wide eyes, I climbed in the driver's seat, said and little prayer and started her up. I stalled out a few times until a got her going and made it home without burning up the clutch. As dad would say, burring out clutches is Mark job.

Another wonderful memory was going over the mountain passes with DBA/Mark. He loved the mountains and loved sharing them with others. My favorite trip was going over Black Bear. It was my one and only time to go over the beautiful, treacherous pass. We jammed to Boston, Chicago, REO Speedwagon and The Eagles as we jostled over the rough terrain laughing and having the time of our life. 

Life was always an adventure with Mark.

There are a lot of great stories involving Mark, but this is one of my favorites!

It was the summer of 1977 in Lake City, Colorado. Those summers spent at Alpine Village are some of my most favorite times!  JoAnn, Cindy, Patsy, Mark and me decided to go swimming at Crooks Falls. We loaded up in the red scout and headed over. We walked down to look at the water from a lower rock we would jump off of.  On the other side of the bank we could see a deer had died and was down in the water near where we would climb out after jumping in on the other side. The water was very "frothy" around the deer and who knows how long it had been there!  Mark would jump first so he could help us out on the other side. The moss on the rocks in the water made it slippery to get out.  Mark jumped in and made it out on the other side just fine   I told him before I jumped in " to make sure you get a hold of my arm to pull me up out of the water so I won't touch the dead deer".  I made sure he knew I better not touch that deer!!  So I jump in, make it to the other side and Mark grabs my hand. I start to lift my foot up to get on the bank and Marks hand slips and my other foot goes right into that deer!!  Well I let him have it with lots of bad words. I didn't laugh at the time, but it sure became one of many funny stories from our great Lake City days!

As the oldest of the cousins, I missed getting to really know Mark as he was growing up in his teen and young adult years, especially in Lake City. These are my special memories of sweet Mark:

Mark had a great sense of humor and loved to get into conversations that could get a little heated sitting around the famous "Blue Table" at the Coates house. He only learned it from the best, his mom, Annette,  Aunt Fray & Aunt Mary Ann. It didn't help when Don and Bruce would add fuel to the fire just to see what Mark would say next!

Mark loved his Jeeps. No Jeep Trail was too much of a challenge  for Mark and his trusty Jeep. Taking Family and friends over the passes was always a joy.

Mark was a collector of every tool you can imagine. Needed to borrow a tool? Good luck finding it ! Only Mark could find it in his Garage. 

Mark loved Star Wars! As bad as he felt, he mustered up to go see the new Star Wars movie last summer in Lake City. It would be his last movie...

Mark loved his "Fireball" shot, and Dr. Pepper. Mark was known to drive all the way to Gunnison just for Mexican food or almost to Montrose just for those special homemade pies from the travel convenience stop. Crazy!

"Mark and Daryl Storytime" - Their real life stories told with their enthusiasm and antics brought tears of laughter year after year.   Sitcom writers would love to use their stories!

OU Sooners! Mark loved his Sooners. No ticket was too pricey for a chance to see OU in the Playoffs at the Cotton Bowl.

Mark was very smart and knew a lot. His computer  was a great resource and tool for Mark. It kept him in the know and up all night!

Mark knew no strangers. Everyone in Lake City knew & loved Mark. If you wanted to know what was going on in Lake City, just ask Mark. He was like the Lake City Inside Edition!

Mark loved his Family, Wagon Wheel, and Lake City. He was always there to help you when you called him (eventually! ) 
I guess this is why
Mark was better known as "The Phantom" to some of the family. He would just disappear for hours and show up later. But he always got the job done!

Mark was a character 
alright, and he will be missed. I can hear him now as he is riding off in the sunset over Engineers in his red Jeep, saying in his John Wayne voice,
" Howdy  Pardner", 
"Have a great day".

Mark was so much fun to be around! He would find the humor in things we all did and he could also laugh at himself. He had a wonderful family of cousins that treated him with love, love and more love. And because of their example, all of us got to know and love Mark and had a complete blast being around him! He was always in the middle of whatever was going on and was anxious to do whatever we wanted to do. He was easy to be around and he made us laugh!  Life as a teenager was heaven on earth in Lake City. Mark is a big part of those memories for me. And I will miss him always

Memories from Mike: 

When Mark was three or four Annette was outside hanging up clothes. She looked around and Mark was gone. She went in the garage where Wayland had been painting the house and had the paint supplies laying out. She looked at Mark, who was covered in paint and holding the paintbrush, and then looked at the car whose hubcaps had a fresh coat of paint. Mark looked at her and said, It wasn't me Mommy.


Mark was over at a friend's house having dinner and didn't want the carrots, so he told the mom he couldn't have carrots because it was bad for his eyes.  

When Mike and Mark were small Annette and Wayland wanted to go out for the evening and got a babysitter. Mike and Mark built a fort in the attic. When the sitter tried to get them down, they started throwing boxes and stuff down the stairs. One of the boxes contained Annette's forty-fives; almost all of the records were destroyed. The babysitter called Annette and Wayland to come home. As soon as the boys heard Waylands voice they knew they were in trouble. Mike came down and got one hard SWAT on his bottom and went crying to bed. As he was laying there, Mike began to laughing as he heard Mark running away from Wayland. Needless to say, Mark got several spankings when he was caught.


Mark had a pet rabbit that he loved. The next door neighbor's dog killed the rabbit. Mark jumped over the fence with a baseball bat and hit the dog. The dog started yelping, Mark jumped back over the fence and was in his own yard when the neighbor came running out to see what had happened. 


When Mike and Mark were little Mike would spend hours building a fort out of the little wooden building blocks, rearranging until everything was exactly the way he wanted it. Then Mark would run in and kick it with pieces flying everywhere. Then the fight was on! Mike would chase Mark through the house yelling at him while Mark laughed and ran away.
