On November 27,1935 an adorable baby girl was born in Waco, Texas to the parents of Herman Leonard and Ellen Nelson.
At the tender age of 6, Mary was orphaned when her mother passed away. She was sent to Lubbock, Texas to live with her Aunt Roberta Thompson who was dedicated to providing for and raising her.
Due to Aunt Roberta’s guidance, Mary grew up to be an independent young lady who was educated in the Waco Independent School District and graduated from Dunbar High School in Waco, Texas.
Mary was a trained skilled nurse’s aide by trade who cared for her patients with love, kindness, gentleness and compassion.
Being an Avid Music Lover (she loved Al Green) would eventually lead Mary to the love of her life.
Each Saturday night Mary would walk a mile or so to listen to music in a local cafe in Snyder, Texas. In her humble and reserved way, she would sit there quietly enjoying the music.
At the end of the evening, she would leave and walk home alone, unbeknownst to Mack Taylor whose eye she had attracted.
After several weeks, Mack asked to walk her home and the rest is history. They became inseparable. It was very rare to see one without the other. After a brief courtship they married and relocated to Fort Worth, Texas in 1969.
They remained a loving couple for over fifty – five years.
To this union, two beautiful children, Preston and Christie
(the apples of Mary’s Eye) were born.
She was also blessed with grandchildren who affectionately called her Nana and Granny.
After relocating to the Highland Hills area, Mary joined East Saint Paul Baptist Church where she remained faithful until her health began to fail.
Mary enjoyed watching all sports on TV and spending time with family and friends.
On September 11, 2024, Mary entered a prepared place for prepared people. She entered the Gates of Heaven where she has cast her crown at the feet of Jesus. “She fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Now there is in store for her a crown of righteousness” – 2 Timothy 4:7-8. She is now reunited with her parents and sister Mabel.
Mary’s precious memories will continue to live in the hearts of those who remain: her loving husband, Mack Taylor; devoted children, Preston Taylor (Paula) of Fort Worth, Texas, Christie Alkebulan (Cranston) of Dallas, Texas, grandchildren, Patrick Taylor (Anna) of Burleson, Texas, Courtney Henson (Jacob) of Fort Worth, Texas, Patience Carter of Fort Worth, Sherrod Taylor of Fort Worth, Amon Alkebulan of Dallas, Nia Alkebulan of Dallas, Texas, Kiros Alkebulan of Dallas, Texas, Heru Alkebulan of Dallas, Texas, great grand children, Hazel Taylor, Norah Taylor, Aiden Taylor, Sahaila Taylor and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
