Mary Agnes Gullatte Thompson was the firstborn of four children on September 20, 1932 in Opelika, Alabama to the union of the late Willie Flowers and Willie Mae Snowden-Gullatte. She attended public schools in Opelika and later moved to Dayton, Ohio. Mary graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, where she was a proud member of the marching band, playing the bass drum. She met the love of her life, the late Willie Tait Thompson, Jr. and married on December 5, 1957, adding five offspring to this union. Together, they traveled several states and settled in Texas with the family in 1965.
Mary was a committed and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend who loved her family dearly. She worked as an assembler at AMF Ben Hogan assembling golf balls for many years. Always aware of the value of a dollar, she worked alongside her husband as an entrepreneur of several businesses. Mary had a smile that would light up a room and she never met a stranger. She was a member of Stewart Chapel CME in Fort Worth, Texas and later moved her membership to Carter Metropolitan CME where she served on the Stewardess Board and the Women’s Missionary Council. On Thursday, August 24, 2023, Mary departed from this walk of life and transitioned from labor to reward. Her hobbies included creating scrumptious meals, mainly collard greens and hot water cornbread, upholstery, traveling, attending church, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mary’s life exemplified the characteristics of a Proverbs 31 woman; a wife of noble character, clothed with strength and dignity, whose children arise and call her blessed, a woman who feared and trusted in the Lord.
The memory of her life and love will forever burn a flame in the hearts of those left to linger. She is preceded in death by her parents Willie Flowers and Willie Mae Snowden-Gullatte, her husband Willie Tait Thompson, Jr. of 65 years, three siblings, Monroe Gullatte, John Gullatte (Tonya), Joe Gullatte (Gladys) her son, Daryl Thompson (Ronee), and her grandson, Danny Thompson, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Lawrence Kelly, Jr. (Andrea), Danny Thompson (Sabrina), Donald Thompson, and Linda Ruth Thompson Barnett; eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends
