

Mel was the 5th child of 15 children. He lived and worked with his parents and siblings on a dairy farm. He joined the U.S. Air Force when he was 18 years old and retired after 20 plus years. He and his former wife, Elizabeth, (now deceased) and their four children made their home in Fort Worth, Texas. After retiring at such an early age, he continued to work as a part owner of C&H Automotive for several years and worked as an automotive supervisor for Walmart for ten years before retiring. Mel was a Baptist and was a lifetime member of VFW 9190.
Mel and his long time companion, Barbara McDonald, did a lot of traveling in his RV all over the U.S. as well as on his motorcycle. Many trips were made back to his hometown of Cheswold, Delaware to visit family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and hunting. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed his many hunting trips to Terlingua with his son and grandsons.
Mel was preceded in death by his father, James Robert Carney and mother Ethel Sammons Carney. Also six sisters and three brothers.Out of his fourteen siblings, only five survive. Four brothers: Isaac Carney (Evelyn); Ronald, aka Sam Carney; Larry, aka as Perry Carney (Lois); and Roland, aka Hickey Carney. One sister: Harriet Street.He is survived by one son: Melvin Carney, Jr. (Laura);Three daughters: Karen Hight (Scott); Joyce Weiss, and Debra Campbell.Eleven grandchildren: Sarah Carney; James Carney (Bonnie); Scott Carney (Stephanie); Dustin Hight (Stephanie); Nathan Hight; Joseph Ferran; Zach Weiss; Elle Weiss; Hana Weiss; Michael Campbell and Tyler Campbell. Eleven great-grandchildren:Braxton Carney; Brook Carney; Peyton Carney; Ava Carney; Anneliese Hight; Lucas Hight; Charlotte Hight; Peyton Hight; Rilee Tucker; Melody Weiss; and Tiber Weiss. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his long time companion Barbara McDonald and her two children: Janet Campanella (Joe); Charles McDonald (Michele) and grandson, Matthew Youngblood.
He was loved by all who knew him.
