He was a twin to Rogers McCalister and the son of Spatsie D. and Mary L. (Graves) McCalister. Roy graduated from St. Paul Industrial School in 1957 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Huston-Tillotson College in May 1964. He proudly served in the National Guard of the United States beginning in 1964 and later worked as a mathematician at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Roy obtained a Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan University in December 1977 and achieved Education Certification in Mathematics in January 1990, along with a Certification of Distinction from the Fort Worth Independent School District in 1985.
His faith was central to his life. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior under Rev. J. Clark at Brookins Chapel Methodist Church. After relocating to Fort Worth, he attended Christland Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Robert Wingham, before eventually becoming a member of Greater Eleazer Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor R. Dowell.
Roy was not only known for his kindness and generosity but also for his vibrant personality. He loved and collected tons of movies, claiming to have the best film library in town. A dynamic card and dominoes player, he often challenged friends and family, confidently asserting that he was the best among all competitors. With a twinkle in his eye, he would invite challengers to take him on, making every game a lively event filled with laughter and friendly banter.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Billye J. Smith. He was married to Girlene Smith and they parted ways amicably, continuing to cherish their friendship. He leaves behind his twin brother, Rogers McCalister (Sally); sister, Imogene Wingham; brothers, Spatsie D. McCalister Jr. (Janie) and Moddie McCalister (Mabel); his bonus children, Sabrina, Jennifer, and Fernando; a great friend, Euradean Jackson; and a host of nieces and nephews. His legacy of compassion, dedication to education, and lively spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.
