With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Tommie Lee (Joe) Washington, who departed from this world on March 29, 2025. Tommie was a cherished husband, father, grand/great grandfather (“Papoo”), son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was a beacon of love and kindness in the lives of all who knew him.
On July 29, 1937, A baby boy was born to R.C. Washington and Pollie Tubbs in Robinson County, TX. They named him Tommie Lee Washington, nicknamed “Joe” as a boy, “Tinchy Joe”. He grew up in Calvert, TX. He attended and graduated from Calvert Colored High School. After graduating from High School, he proudly joined the United States Air Force (USAF). He served in the military for 22 plus years traveling to several countries, Europe, Asia and Pacific continent. After retiring from the USAF, he began his civilian life at the United States Postal Office (USPO) until he retired in 2002. Which gave him far more time to enjoy his passions of golfing, fishing, hunting and traveling to see his family and siblings any time he had the “itch” to do so.
In 1959, he met and married his lovely wife Ms. Barbara Jean Cannon, and to that union three children were born. Michell (Mike) Bernard, Mildred Yvette and Nealie Roberta. He loved his children with all his heart and soul. His wish for his family is not to mourn or grieve for him as he always stated, “I’m blessed, and I lived a very good life!”
Tommie leaves to cherish his memories: His wife Barbara of 64 years, 11 months, two sons: Donald O. Hodge Tx. and Michell B. (LaLana) Washington, Godley TX., two daughters: Mildred Y. Howard Ft. Worth, TX. and Nealie (Cookie) R. (Brian) Kinchion of Everman TX; two brothers: Patrick (Lisa) Tubbs of Hearne TX., Lee Charles (Pamela) Bennett, Bryan, TX. Three sisters: Dorothy M. Wilson, Sheila Tubbs of Houston, TX, Barbara Cofer of Plano, TX.
Eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and a tribe of nephews, nieces and cousins; along with a host of dear friends.
All shall forever hold Joe, Dad, “Papoo”, Uncle Joe, in their hearts and memories. Tommie’s absence will be profoundly felt, but his love and life will continue to guide and inspire us in what a true patriarch should be. His strength and spirit truly evident to all, as he faced life’s last challenges with grace and resilience.
“To my Family: I am going to a place that no living being knows where except Jes us. But life goes on. Although I am not here with you in the flesh, I will always be with you in spirit. Keep the faith and the good Lord will see you through. I love you all dearly!” Joe
