Tony Wayne Sims loved the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind and he loved his family and friends and neighbors as he loved himself. Tony’s four sons are the pride of his life as well as his best friend and wife, Amy Irene.
In Austin, Kenny, the musician and scientist. Married to beautiful Sheila. In Japan, Atticus, the scholar, artist and entrepreneur. With Yukari and children, Isabella and Owen. In Colorado, Perry, the adventure and lover of Nature and manager at Nova Guides outdoor adventure. In Granbury, Hunter, the successful business owner Elite Electric. Married to lovely Amanda and children Hunter and Jayden.
Tony’s family circle included more than just us. David Zepeda, his lifelong friend of 73 years extended our family. Meeting as children in the Texas Boys Choir, getting to share lives from Germany with lovely Monika and are goddaughters Caroline and Clara. Gaylord, and her family are forever friends. For years, Kris would call Tony and Father’s Day. Richard and Pam Pike from Steel Plant Canada days from the 70's.
The Hetherly extended our family to wonderful influential folks in Mount Vernon. Tony has loved fellowship and time spent with the Hallmans at Duff Ranch in San Angelo.
Tony is a cowboy from his hat to his boots. So many people he encouraged. I think everyone who knew him walked away a better person. He worked hard and played harder, enjoying golf, smoking briskets, making pecan pies. And he was skilled in the art of the porch swing. Sitting on the front porch of our beloved Fairmount home, visiting with the best neighbors in the world, Stan and Michael and Jesters and everyone as they walk by. Then there was the farm on the Brazos river, where he relaxed, communed with Nature and singing hymns as he mowed the grass with his tractor.
Tony was Bart's first poet. Writing over 200 poems about life as he saw it, love, nature and politics. They would come to him in a flow from the Holy Spirit. Never opening up a dictionary and rarely changing a word after he typed it on his phone. There was a time we were driving back from A&M and he had to pull over to take a few minutes to write about the beautiful vistas he saw. "Celebrations" is his first published book.
Tony had several successful and varied careers. Seventy eight years of living and loving life, fully, optimistically and intentionally. Beginning in the Steel Manufacturing Field, as Superintendent of Human Resources and Governmental Affairs, and Political, Lobbyist for the Castmetal Federation.
Then Vice President of Sales for a large Funeral Home and Cemetery Firm. Specializing in consumer products and heading the Pre-need and Family Services Department.
Finally, he retired this winter from Real Estate / Property Management. Tony was primarily responsible for acquiring new properties and working with owners questions and concerns, as well as legal affairs. He was always involved professionally in elected positions and volunteer committees in the Real Estate world. Also active in a number of civic and charitable causes in his beloved Fort Worth. Tony, along with Sue McLean, were founding members of Code Blue Neighborhood Patrol; helping save and restore his beloved Fairmount Ave. And then the fun part as drummer for the Fairmount Marching Band; participating in annual parades. Another way he served was to set up and run the sound system for "The Slab" a homeless street ministry on Rosedale.
Education: Tony received his BBA from Texas Wesleyan University with major in communications and minors in economics and psychology. But his heart was always as an Aggie where he started his education.
Tony Wayne Sims is a man’s man. Someone who might be seen crying during the National Anthem, if it is sung with the same soulful passion that matches the emotion in his heart. He loved America, the history of America and being involved in politics. His life is anchored in Faith, Family and Fun.
A six generation Texan, born and raised in Fort Worth, Tony was proud of his country roots and had some “cowboyisms” that are guaranteed to make you laugh your boots off. He loved to laugh, tell jokes and see people having fun. He even laughed in his sleep. “Have Fun” is the Sims Family motto. Yes, he talked in his sleep too. He was one of those Mensa smart people who could talk to anyone about just about anything.
Before Google, we would ask Tony, and if he didn’t know, his BS was dazzling enough to convince you that he had an answer. He had a magnetic mind for information, keen to listen watch read, and learn.
He was well-known for his smoking meat and always made enough to share with the neighbors. A bowl of his great grandfather‘s chili is enough to make a rabbit hugger hound. Followed by his amazing homemade pecan pie, using his mother Rubye’s recipe.
Tony was a hard-working man with thousands of great stories to tell. I’ve known this patient kind man for most of my adult life. He introduced me to Jesus along time ago, and I’m eternally grateful. He is my best friend and husband.
In lieu of flowers please donate to a favorite charity of Tony's GFWAR Education Foundation.
