Winnie Jewel Blaylock (Sista) entered this world on the festive day of May 29, 1958, in Tyler,
Texas the beloved daughter and 2nd child of Mattie Jewel Cuba and Earl Blaylock. She embarked
on her educational journey starting in Tyler for Elementary and Middle School, one year at John
Tyler High School before transferring to Fort Worth Dunbar High School where she graduated.
Sista had a zest for life and amongst her passion was dancing. She taught Creative Dance,
Modern Dance and Jazz Dance for many years without any formal training, providing
mentorship and leadership to numerous young women who went on to further their dance style in
the art. Sista cherished moments with family and friends, always traveling to visit family
throughout the city, the metroplex and East Texas. Being the oldest girl, she took it upon herself
to make sure everyone around her was taken care of. No one experienced that more than me, her
Baby Brother (Henry), I was the recipient of much care; I was once told by a friend that instead
of me being a (Mama’s Boy, I was a Sista’s Boy). That is how much I cared for and respected
her. My niece Davesha received a heavy dose of mother-like love to the point they looked alike. I
may be reaching a bit, she is my brother’s daughter. Her spiritual foundation was laid early on as
she accepted Christ at Antioch Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
Professionally, Winnie (Sista) showcased her talents on many stages and levels from fast food,
fashion Designer, to Tandy Wire and Cable on assembly line/machine operator, Freight Masters
Logistics as a Forklift Driver, Halliburton Industries as a forklift driver and lastly a
Paraprofessional for Fort Worth Independent School District. She was a devoted member of
Providence Baptist Church, under the pastoral leadership of Rev Eddie Killingsworth.
The hallmark of Sista’s life was her unwavering strength and strong personality. On Sunday,
April 20, 2025 (Easter Sunday), after a valiant fight to recover from a Brain Aneurysm, Sista was
called to her heavenly home. She joins her mother, Mattie Jewel Cuba; father, Earl Blaylock.
Her legacy lives on even after not bearing children herself, the many lives she touched and
shaped during her time on this earth to include her children at her school where she worked. Her
best friend and baby sister Frances Gordon, brothers Freddy Blaylock (Patricia), Henry Blaylock
(Lue); and her cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who’s life she touched they will
forever remember her grace, humor and vibrant spirit.
