Nina J. Piazza (née Filardi), 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Framingham, MA, on January 29, 2026. Born in White Plains, NY, on March 27, 1936, she was the eldest of three children born to Hazel and Anthony Filardi. She moved with her family to Waterford, CT, at a young age, where her journey of learning and service began.
Nina earned her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College. It was there that her love for travel was born while spending a semester abroad in Hawaii. She then attended Simmons College, where she received a Master’s in Social Work. It was during her early career working at Children’s Hospital in Boston, where she met her future husband, forever travel companion and true love, Dr. Eugene Piazza, a child and adolescent psychiatrist. They married on November 17, 1962, and shared a deep and loving partnership for 59 years until Eugene’s passing in 2021.
Nina and Gene moved to Sudbury and started a family, Nina taking time from her career to raise her two children, a role she cherished. She and Gene traveled extensively, visiting England, exploring France and Italy, snorkeling in the Galapagos islands, and discovering the rich history in the streets and Grand Bazaar in Turkey.
She began playing the piano at age six and shared that joy with her community and family for decades. She was an active member of the First Parish Unitarian Church of Sudbury, where she sang in the choir, performed on the piano and often provided transportation to and from sermons for elderly parishioners. Nina loved spending time with her husband, taking her grandchildren to Tower Hill, the Garden in the Woods, and other outings in and around the area, reading, gardening, and in her later years spending time with Eddie the cat who was her constant companion and birdwatching partner.
She will be remembered as a kind, generous, and compassionate woman who was a devoted friend, loving wife and mother, and doting grandmother.
Nina is survived by her daughter, Andrea Wexler, and her husband, Gary, of Redding, CT; her son, Paul Piazza, Esq., and his wife, CJ, of Framingham, MA; and her five beloved grandchildren: Heather Wexler, Ryan Wexler, Caroline Wexler, Alison Piazza, and Brayden Piazza. She is also survived by her two brothers, Peter Filardi of Mystic, CT, and David Filardi of Burlington, VT.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to her devoted caregivers, Tina Baia and Maria Wheeler, for their kindness, friendship and compassionate care in Nina’s final years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to FriendshipWorks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing companionship to elders to reduce isolation (www.fw4elders.org).
