
She was born June 21, 1919 in the Town of Meredith, the daughter of George and Maude (Hewitt) Ulmer. She went to school in West Meredith until moving to Treadwell in 1927, graduating from AL Kellogg School in Treadwell in 1937.
She married William E. Barnes on October 29, 1940 in Treadwell. He predeceased her on June 11, 2005.
She operated a dairy farm with her husband in Treadwell for over 30 years. She was always very proud of their Jersey herd. She also worked part-time in the Treadwell Post Office, retiring in 1984 after serving as Postmistress for several years. She enjoyed her family, her cats, traveling with her husband, square dancing and especially playing cards baking cookies and pies and taking walks in the woods with her granddaughters.
Shirley is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Nancy Barnes, and her son, Burton Barnes all of Treadwell; three granddaughters, Amanda Barnes of Treadwell, Cassandra Barnes of Cortland and Amber and Kirk Watts of Friendswood, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Henrietta Ulmer of Treadwell and Mildred and Robert Smith of Oneonta and several nieces nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Walter Ulmer and nephews, David Ulmer and Steve “Stub” Ulmer
There will be no calling hours or service at this time. A memorial service will be held in early May at the Treadwell United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in the Croton Union Cemetery in Treadwell at the convenience of the family.
