

Walter James Burnell, age 61, of Miamisburg, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at Miami Valley Hospital. Walter was born in Chitose Hokkaido, Japan on August 12, 1963 to Garry Norman and Arletha Ann (LaValley) Burnell.
Walter served in the US Air Force from 1981 to 2002 working initially as an aircraft fueler, he later transferred into the Quality Management field before becoming a wartime planner at the close of his career with the 9th Air Force Headquarters, Shaw Air Force Base, SC. He continued in this role at Langley AFB in Virginia as a contractor. He received his BS Degree in Computer Programming from St. Leo's College, an Associates Degree in Dietetics at Sinclair Community College, and Master's Degree in Health Care Administration from WGU. Walt enjoyed the outdoors, camping, cooking, music, and his family. While in the Air Force he sang and played guitar for the Catholic Chapel, directing the Saturday Choir . Walt became involved in the Cub Scouts in Virginia as a den leader, later serving as an Assistant Cub Master at Keesler AFB, Mississippi prior to his position as a scouting District Executive there. After Hurricane Katrina and the family's relocation to Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio in 2005 he served as the Wright Brothers District Executive. Upon completion of his Dietetics degree he began his career with Premier Health as a diet technician at Miami Valley Hospital main and south campuses before taking on the role of Resource Coordinator for the Cancer Center at Miami Valley Hospital South. He found his true calling working for the cancer patient population as the System Administrator working to build a cancer survivorship program for Premier Health. Walt made lasting impressions on all he met, creating strong friendships and sharing his sense of humor and joy of life.
He was preceded in death by his father Garry Burnell and brothers, Timothy Burnell and Richard Burnell. Walt is survived by his wife of 20 years, Patricia Burnell; his four children, Timothy (Danielle) Burnell of Columbia, South Carolina, Angela (Spencer) King of Washburn, Maine, Megan (Shane) Seivert of Wexford, PA, Andrew (Alyssa) Seivert of West Carrollton, OH; his three grandchildren, Aubree Burnell, Timothy James Burnell, and Carrigan Lynn King; his mother, Arletha Ann Burnell of Constable. NY; his sisters, Lynn (Bob) Gadway of Brushton, NY, Geri (John) Vanier of Malone, NY; his sister-in-law, Julie Burnell of Albany, GA; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved cat Cocoa.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 26, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Anderson Funeral Home, 1357 E. 2nd St., Franklin, Ohio 45005. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, February 27, 2025 at St Henry Catholic Church, 6696 N Springboro Pk, Dayton, OH. Walter will be laid to rest with military honors at 2:00 PM February 27, 2025 at the Dayton National Cemetery, 4100 W. 3rd St, Dayton, OH.
