It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Alfredo Gaerlan Punsalan, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, who went to be with the Lord on March 19, 2024, at the age of 88. Alfredo departed this life peacefully at his residence in Union City, California.
Born in Manila, Philippines, to Alfredo M. Punsalan, Sr. of San Simon, Pampanga, and Aurelia Gaerlan Punsalan of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Alfredo faced the adversity of losing his mother when he was six and his father when he was 17. This early hardship instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility to unconditionally support his six siblings under the guardianship of their uncle, Atty. Manuel Gaerlan, Sr.
Alfredo was an exemplary student, graduating with honors in Electronic Technology from Feati University after completing his secondary education at Torres High School. His academic achievements led him to a distinguished career in electronics, beginning with an apprenticeship training at the US Naval Base in Subic Bay, Philippines. Alfredo's expertise in radio repair and shipboard electronics led him to notable positions at Clark Air Force Base, the 1961st Communication Group at the US Embassy in Manila, until he immigrated to California in 1988. He continued his career at Harris Corporation and Star Microwave Service Corporation for 21 years, until he retired in 2009.
Alfredo's love story began at the IEMELIF Church in Manila, where he met Norma when he was 17 and she was 15. Their decade-long courtship blossomed into a marriage lasting 61 years, producing four children.
Alfredo was a simple man. He was loving, kind, thoughtful, dedicated and very hardworking. His generosity was greatly admired by many. He was always ready to help others without any hesitation. He was unwavering. He sometimes appeared so serious but was actually a very kind and caring person. He was our provider, protector, supporter and comforter. He was a faithful believer and follower of Christ. He was a choir member and served as a trustee at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Fremont, California.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and perseverance, survived by his wife Norma; children, Alma and Genesis, Alan and Leny, Alex and Imelda, Alfa and Tony; grandchildren, Elijah, Darren, Anthony, Hallie, and Alden; and his siblings, Amelia, Teresita, and Rogelio.
Alfredo's life was a testament to the power of faith, the importance of family, and the impact of a generous spirit. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew him. His family looks up to him as their hero who built a strong foundation for the forever closely-knit family he will always be proud of.
