JD, age 40, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2018. After over twelve years of surviving a post brain aneurysm as a result of a ruptured brain Arterio-venuous Malformation (AVM), he died of brain stem herniation. His final twelve hours was spent with family before his young but brave heart slowed down to meet his Creator.
Our beloved JD is survived by his two sons Kenneth Dumapias and Sebastian Dumapias; parents Eduardo Dumapias, Sr, and Erlinda Santos; his siblings Edilyn Dumapias, Sherielyn (Dumapias) Gardner, and Dennis Dumapias. Born in the Philippines, JD moved to California in 1995 where he lived for most of his life. He joined the U.S. Navy from March 1996 to April 2000 where he traveled to Singapore and Korea, and was stationed in Japan before being honorably discharged. During his time with the Navy, JD received education and worked as a Machinist Mate 3rd class. Post-military, he worked a variety of jobs in the service industry while attending Devry University where he completed an associate Degree in Business. JD was a Ramp Duty Manager at San Francisco International airport at the time of his brain hemorrhaging. JD was a loving father and worked very hard to be a good provider to his two sons - who were only 2 years and 9 months of age when JD became a quadriplegic on May 16, 2016. He was only 28 and had many hopes and dreams.
JD is witty and will always be remembered for his sarcastic humor. He was a prankster and made a lot of people laugh. Over time, his vision was impacted from the complications he had from multiple post-surgeries. The main form of communication is spelling the letters out with the use of an alphabet board with a lot of patience. Once, an aunt was visiting from Reno, Nevada and when asked if he could see her. He replied “Oo. Pangit pa rin” (Yes, she’s still ugly) before bursting into a big laughter. One day he asked our mother to spell “pogi” (handsome) in which he said “JD”. His friends and family loved him for his endearing character and is one of the things we will miss the most.
JD was an incredible man with a big heart. He used his first paycheck from the Navy to help purchase a family van for his parents and siblings. He worked hard, valued relationships, inspired and touched many people’s lives through his inner strength and a strong desire to live. Outside of work, he enjoyed the company of his family and friends over drinks and good food, played poker and video games.
Please join us in celebrating JD’s life for a church mass followed by a lunch reception, a chapel memorial service and viewing on Friday, October 12. Please scroll down to the Services section for details, location, and times.
In lieu of sending his family sympathy gifts, memorial donations can be made to help support the future of his two sons. https://www.gofundme.com/memorial-fund-for-jd-eduardo
We want to give special thanks to the Neurology, ICU, and Intermediate staff at the Veterans Affair Hospital in Palo Alto for truly “serving those who served”.
