Maria Awanin Deluna was born in Binmaley, Pangasinan, Philippines on August 12, 1924. As a child, she excelled at all of her undertakings. This was evident when she graduated as Valedictorian at Binmaley Catholic High School. She was inspired by the story of Florence Nightingale and thus pursued a nursing career. With her drive and devotion, she garnered her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at the University of Santo Thomas on full scholarship. Her educational success assisted her to be the Head Nurse at the Provincial Hospital in Dagupan City, Pangasinan.
In 1955, Maria then married her love, Eugenio Deluna, SR. Her focus was to provide a better life for her growing family, so in 1976, she made her move to the United States. They settled in a cozy home in San Lorenzo, where they helped their children and watched their families grow. Maria was a Clinical Nurse at Fairmont Hospital in San Leandro for 14 years. Maria was not only present and active in the lives of her children and grandchildren, she was a part of the Catholic community and served as a Eucharistic Minister and sang for the choir for St. John's Catholic Church in San Lorenzo. Alongside with her husband, they enjoyed attending functions held by the Traveler's Protective Association, Knights of Columbus, Vicariate Choir and the Sons and Daughters of Binmaley Association to name a few.
In her life, Maria always put others first, as manifested in her line of work as a nurse, her devotion to the Lord and the Catholic Church, but above all, her priority was family. She was not only a loving mother and grandmother, she too was a friend, an adviser and a teacher. She instilled values of respect, hard work, and higher education. Happiness to Maria was being with her family and enjoying the company of relatives, friends and colleagues.
