Pedro P. Abalos, our beloved “Daddy”, (1930-2024) always believed that family is the foundation of life. A family’s love will keep you grateful and motivated to live like you never have lived before. Pedro, 93 years old, of Santa Clara, CA, died peacefully at home on April 1, 2024.
Pedro was born in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Philippines in 1930 to Juan S. Abalos and Epifania S. Pagarigan. He was always working hard because he wanted a better life for his family.
He graduated from Luzon Colleges in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, Philippines with a BA in Commerce. The U.S. Navy conducted a test to train 50 soldiers in the U.S. There were 500 to 1,000 applicants at the testing center. Pedro was in the top 10 and was trained in the U. S. Navy. In 1954, he joined the Navy. He was an Electrician’s Mate 3 in the Navy and fought in the Vietnam War. He provided a good life for his parents, brothers, and sister.
Pedro has his heart and eyes set on a beautiful neighbor named Rosalina. One day, he built enough courage and asked Rosalina’s dad for permission to court her. They got married on August 31, 1966, at Lingayen Catholic Church and were blessed with six children: Belemia, Maybelyn, Alexander, Christopher, Jennifer, and Jeannette. Pedro was also blessed with 13 grandchildren: Alexandra Flor, Robell, Roen, Kacey, Janessa, Matthew, Michael, Kyla, Hazel, Brandon, Jacen, Katelynn, and Ryan.
Although Pedro had to leave the Philippines to serve in the U.S. Navy, he would write to Rosalina every day. He would come back to the Philippines every year to be with Rosalina and his children. Pedro retired from the Navy after 22 years of service. Afterward, he worked at the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System and El Camino Hospital for 20 years.
Pedro was a dedicated Catholic and practiced the teachings of Jesus everyday. He enjoyed reading, listening to music, social gatherings, and traveling with family. He was a great swimmer and a Martial Arts expert. He was known to have beautiful handwriting in cursive. He followed Dr. Whitaker’s recommendation to “walk 5,000 steps for a longer life”. He would do this every day before he died.
Pedro was always known to be wise and keep a cool head. He talked to his grandchildren about how they should always love each other because they are family. He loved to tell stories about his life, faith in God, values, experiences, successes, family, and the lessons he learned. He always made sure to be there at every birthday and family event. He never forgot to greet his children and grandchildren with a “Happy Birthday”.
Pedro and Rosalina celebrated 50 years of marriage with their family in August 2016. It was the happiest and the most unforgettable moment for them and the whole family. In his final moments, Pedro was surrounded by all those who loved him.
