Eleanor Shouppe Holley, age 92 of Minneapolis, Minnesota and long-time Floridian. Eleanor Holley died unexpectedly and peacefully at home in Minneapolis on May 17, 2025. Eleanor was born April 11, 1933 near Cottondale, Florida, the middle of seven children of Jefferson D. and Saluma (Campbell) Shouppe. Eleanor married Dudley C. Holley on June 23, 1951, shortly after her graduation from Cottondale High School, and they shared 55 years together in Cottondale and Jacksonville (FL) until his death in 2006. She became a proud mother at the young age of 19 of her only child, daughter Karen Holley Horrell. Eleanor lost her father at an early age and, as the only sibling remaining in the Cottondale area, undertook a lead role in caring for her widowed mother for many years.
A woman of strong faith, Eleanor treasured the fellowship of Deermeadows Baptist Church for over 25 years. She was an avid reader, good conversationalist with a beautiful laugh, tended a lovely flower garden, traveled extensively and enjoyed classical and church music. She had a keen business mind and managed the family's finances. Tall and elegant with a classic sense of style, she was also proud of her role on the girls' high school basketball team, playing in the mid-century half-court era. While working full-time as the Office Manager of the Marianna (FL) Chamber of Commerce, Eleanor completed an Associate Bachelor's degree at Chipola Junior College in 1965. She later worked in administrative roles for several organizations in Jacksonville before retiring to travel and support Dudley's successful sales career
Eleanor and Dudley visited numerous countries and most US states in their travels, with Alaska and Hawaii being favorites. They also enjoyed visiting Cincinnati and Clear Lake (IN) to be with Karen and her family. With the arrival of her great-granddaughters, Eleanor bravely decided to make a new life in Minneapolis after 91 years in Florida so she could be closer to her "four generations of strong women". Many family visits, dinners, holidays and birthdays were celebrated together in the past year. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jack Horrell; granddaughter, Holley Horrell and her husband, Craig McDonnell; and two great-granddaughters, Aoife Eleanor McDonnell, and Margery K. McDonnell. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Theressa, Elaine, Sue and Myralyn; her twin brother, Franklin; and her brother, Davis.
A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at 11:30 am Friday, August 15, 2025 at the Clear Lake Lutheran Church Pavillion. Interment will follow at Clear Lake Lutheran Cemetery.
If desired, memorials may be made to Clear Lake Township Land Conservancy, 111 Gecowets Drive, Fremont, IN. 46737.
