For Grandma Hazel
With heavy hearts we say goodbye,
Yet lift our gaze toward Heaven’s sky.
Today dear Hazel’s race is run,
She’s joined with Cleon and with their son.
Together again where the rivers flow,
To camp and fish as they used to go.
Baking cookies with a steady hand,
Making popcorn to meet the game time demand.
IU hoops with Knight on the floor,
Cheering the Hoosiers forevermore.
Family cookouts, laughter and cheer,
Cleon’s chicken – best far and near.
The charcoal smoked, the juice would drip,
Each basted with love, each precisely flipped.
Cousins played, the adults would swing,
Childhood joy in everything.
Lessons given, gentle and true,
On how to live and what to do.
Her voice still whispers, firm yet kind,
To shape our hearts and guide our mind.
